IRELAND MANAGER GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI has named his 23-man squad for this summer’s European Championships, with no place for Wigan’s James McCarthy.

The former Hamilton youngster’s father has been diagnosed with cancer and he asked not to be considered for the squad.

Otherwise, there were few surprises in the panel, with Sunderland winger James McClean completing his meteoric rise by claiming one of the midfield berths.

Trapattoni has ignored the clamour for the inclusion of Wes Hoolahan, so instrumental in Norwich’s first season back in the Premier League.

Five players have been named on a standby list by Trapattoni – including Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Paul Green and Andy Keogh.

Speaking during his press conference, Trapattoni said: “It wasn’t easy to choose the 23 players for the squad because we have very many good players.

“I’ve spoken to all the players on the standby list and to those who didn’t make the squad.”

Trapattoni added that McCarthy would have been in the squad had his father not been taken ill, and that he remains part of his plans for the future.

Talking about McClean, the Italian said: “McClean is playing well, and not only because of his goals. He will surely be with us in the next campaign as well.”

Midfielders: Whelan, Gibson, Andrews, Fahey, Duff, McGeady, Hunt, McClean

Forwards: Keane, Doyle, Cox, Long, Walters.

Standby: Randolph, McShane, Green, Coleman, Keogh.
