Trapattoni delays naming team to face Spain

Playing 4-5-1 against the World and European Champions is still very much an option for the Republic of Ireland.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI KEPT Spain guessing about his plans for tomorrow’s crunch Euro 2012 clash by delaying the announcement of his starting XI.

The Italian had been expected to name his team at a press conference this afternoon and end the speculation about how the Republic of Ireland will approach a game they cannot afford to lose.

But addressing the media, he said that he would wait until closer to the 7.45pm kick-off in Gdansk before giving the reigning World and European Champions a sneak peek at the challenge they will face.

“I have an idea but we can’t always give the opponent the lineup,” he said coyly.

The possibility of playing 4-5-1 with a lone striker — adding an extra man to combat the world-class Spanish midfield — has been discussed at length this week and Trapattoni indicated that this is still very much an option.

I’m thinking about the best solution for us in this game. Our objective is to be offensive but at the same time we need also to find a way to help the midfield because sometimes we suffer in this situation.

After training today, I can better clarify our situation psychologically and physically.

Poll: Should Trap drop Robbie Keane for the Spain game tomorrow?

  • I’m just glad he’s stopped naming the team so far in advance. Sure Croatia knew exactly what to expect

    1. We never play offensive football under Trap. Not even against the Armenia’s, Estonia’s, Andorra’s or Georgia’s of the world.
    2. “Sometimes we suffer in midfield”. Hmm. We have never dominated possession against any side we have faced under Trap, and that includes the weaker European nations aforementioned. We consistently play the same defensive system with no ball control or technical skill evident.

This man has confounded and frustrated me (even more so!) in recent weeks. Foleygate went against everything our last 2 campaigns have stood for. Loyalty, brotherhood and defensively-strong-hard-working tactics and this must have had some effect on the squads “mentality” as none of these characteristics were on show against Croatia. There was no communication, no hard graft, no team spirit and the Croats showed us up to be, what we are, a very limted and lucky nation to be this far in the competition. Yes, you can say we conceded goals at inopportune moments but these are the times in football matches where we generally are at our strongest physically and mentally and we just totally switched off at these key moments.

Throughout his entire reign as Ireland manager Trap has claimed that we dont have the resources or wealth of choice as other nations. Obviously there is an element of truth behind this as our population is just over 4 million but there is a well full of talent available to us that Trap either overlooked, took a disliking to, or simply just didnt trust to play his ever so difficult to grasp tactics. Since he landed on these shores his handling of youth has been atrocious. As his system of teamwork and hard work are used to stymie and stifle our opposition this is exactly what he has done to the future of the Irish national team. Coleman, McCarthy and McClean are 3 players who should be showing off their obvious talents at this competition but because of mistreatment and a lack of faith from their manager they will not. Does anybody care that we are currently 18th in the world? I dont, considering our WC qualifying group has already been drawn and we are pretty much screwed as 3rd seeds there. Trap had ample oppotunities in friendlies to try players on the edge of the squad but always feared too much about results than trying anything different or new. Even players like Walters, Long, Gibson, Westwood, who are permanent fixtures in the squad dont have enough international experience under their belts and because of this he is too cautious to try them now. When you have a look at some of the players sitting on the bench or on their couches at home (Pilkington, Weso, Tierney, wilson, Coleman, McCarthy, Best, Brady, Clark, Clarke, Daly, Stokes, Hendrick, Mason, Meyler, Sammon, White) you see so much inexperience at international level. Yeah i used http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/PlayerDetails for some assistance, Wanna fight about it! These are all names that have been on form for their respective sides at some point during Traps reign. You have to ask yourself what harm could it have done to have tried some of these guys in worthless games against the like of Hungary, Norn Iron, Scotlnad , Wales(cant think of any more cos they were generally awful).

Phew. Feel much better after that. Sorry for borin anyone who Kept reading!
