Trap names final Euros squad — McShane in, Foley out

“I have spoken to him and understand how difficult it is, saying that he can remain with the squad if he wishes,” Trap says.

IRELAND MANAGER  Giovanni Trapattoni has today finalised his 23-man squad for EURO 2012.

And the news is that Paul McShane — only added to the panel last week — has booked his flight to Poland.

John O’Shea has been deemed fit for the tournament while Paul Green is also included.  The decision to include McShane is heartbreaking for Kevin Foley who misses out; he can remain with the squad for the duration, Trap says, though that’s little consolation.

The Wolves defender reported with a hamstring problem and has been working ever since in an effort to shake it off. He’s the second player to be sent home following Birmingham midfielder Keith Fahey’s departure at the weekend after the Bosnia game.

“With the injuries that we experienced in the squad over the past week, I have had to make a tough decision when it comes to naming the 23 players that must be submitted to UEFA for the championship,” said the Italian.

“Kevin Foley, John O’Shea, Paul McShane, Darren O’Dea, Shay Given had all been carrying knocks and we have been monitoring them closely in their recovery. Although Kevin has been recovering well, I have made the difficult decision to leave him out of the 23 player list after completing fitness tests on John O’Shea and Paul McShane this morning.

“I have spoken to him and understand how difficult it is, saying that he can remain with the squad if he wishes.”

The full squad is: Shay Given, Sean St Ledger, Stephen Ward, John O’Shea, Richard Dunne, Glenn Whelan, Aiden McGeady, Keith Andrews            Kevin Doyle, Robbie Keane, Damien Duff , Stephen Kelly, Paul McShane, Jonathan Walters, Darron Gibson, Keiren Westwood, Stephen Hunt, Darren O’Dea, Shane Long, Simon Cox, Paul Green, James McClean, David Forde.

    • Thought he had a good game at the weekend to be fair. We know what he can and can’t do on a regular day, but we’ve never been that good on paper going into a tournament.

Ireland are always the plucky underdog, and the main characteristic of the plucky underdog is a group of mediocre players who find, somewhere, an edge and play out of their skin. McShane has impressed me on about 10-15% of the occasions I’ve watched him, but could well turn out to be a good tournament player.

He showed a lot of hunger on Saturday I thought, and that can be the difference between getting a spot on the bench, and sitting in the stands, in a squad so devoid of stars.

    • All though we all feel sad for Foley and Fahey, the players selected will give 110% if called to action. We have to all get behind the whole team and support them to do the best they can instead of all the negative comments.
      C’mon Ireland!

    • Paul McShane played twice for Hull City last season, 12 times for Crystal Palace and still manages to get the nod ahead of Seamus Coleman who played 24 league and cup games for Everton… there’s no justice in the world!!

Nobody wanted Gary Breen before the 2002 world cup, he was clubless. He had a decent world cup ending up being linked with Barca had had a deal done with Inter only to fail the medical. After that he went back to his usual self.
Lets go with blind faith and pray McShane is the new Breen….although even at that I cant see anyone singing “we all dream of a team of Paul McShanes!”

  • Paul Green included. Awful player. Ireland definitely have better, he doesn’t even have a club at the moment having left English powerhouses Derby County.

  • Mcshane is a warrior,no one can doubt his courage,he played well last season in the carling cup and did well at the weekend,we know he can be rash, but foley has,nt really featured so im not too unhappy,Green on the otherhand is out of his depth at this level, hoolahan would have been the correct replacement for fahey IMO,but how can anybody question the old man at this stage.IN TRAP WE TRUST!

    • McShane’s not a warrior, he’s a liability. It’s no coincidence he’s had 7 clubs in the last 7 years. What’s done is done though, he’s in the squad now and bar some Tuscan player kicks him into the stand during tonights friendly there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Let’s hope John O’Shea recovers in time for the Euros!!

  • Tough on Foley, if i was to bring McShane in it would have been in place of Kelly. One thing i dont understand is how Paul Green is there, ahead of Coleman, Pilkington and Houlahan. Maybe its some genius PR stunt by the Italian to show his commitment to Eire, take Greens surname, combined with Traps & McShanes haircolour…only thing that makes sense

    • What an ignorant comment. Keane has shown himself to be a big game player for us on numerous occasions, and nevermind the fact he is our all time highest goalscorer, people like you still knock him. Tell us, oh wise one, who you would’ve brought in his place?

    • you have a pop at Keane, but you don’t come up with an alternative. Keane contributes do much more than just on the pitch. his very presence gives the squad a lift, he’s a leader and a great example of wanting to play for your country, unlike another similarly-named player from cork. Robbie turns up for every game, meaningless friendly or big tournament. He’s more than earned his place.
