CHAMPIONS LOUGHMORE-CASTLEINEY are through to the semi-finals of the Tipperary senior hurling championship and they will be joined by Mullinahone after today’s quarter-final double-header in Semple Stadium.
Loughmore-Castleiney needed heroic goalkeeping from Shane Nolan before they claimed a 0-17 to 2-10 win over Clonoulty-Rossmore, the defeated finalists in 2010 and 2011.
Clonoulty-Rossmore were in front narrowly by 2-5 to 0-10 at the break thanks to goals from Timmy Hammersley and John O’Neill while Liam McGrath struck 0-6 for Loughmore-Castleiney.
But Loughmore-Castleiney fought back in the second-half to go three points clear, 0-17 to 2-8, and despite conceding two late points, they held on to prevail by the minimum.
The opening match was a thrilling encounter as Mullinahone won out by 3-17 to 3-16 against Kildangan after extra-time. Eoin Kelly was the scoring hero as he struck 2-7 for the winners.
Mullinahone lead by 0-10 to 0-6 at half-time and were 1-13 to 0-10 clear during the second-half before a Kildangan scoring spree rocked them. It took a late Kelly point to rescue a 2-12 to 1-15 draw for Mullinahone to force extra-time.
Kildangan continued to dictate the game in extra-time and went in front 3-16 to 1-17 with just seven minutes remaining but two late Mullinahone goals helped the 2002 champions claim a famous win as they advanced to the last for.
