Sharks' forward banned for three weeks after Super Rugby face stamp

Jean Deysel had his suspension reduced due to a good record, ‘genuine remorse’ and an apology to his opponent.

SANZAR HAVE CONFIRMED that Sharks’ flanker Jean Deysel has been suspended for three weeks after pleading guilty to stamping on an opponent in the Super Rugby match against the Crusaders last weekend.

The incident occurred in the 16th minute of the game, when Deysel’s boot made contact with the face of Jordan Taufua. A red card was issued to the Sharks back row by referee Rohan Hoffman, and Deysel was subsequently investigated under Law 10.4 (b).

10.4 (b) Stamping or trampling. A player must not stamp or trample on an opponent.

Advocate Jannie Lubbe SC, the same man who cleared Ed O’Donoghue of an eye gouge, was assisted by former Munster player John Langford in making his decision.

In explaining the three-week ban, Lubbe drew attention to the fact that “Taufua illegally held on to the foot of Deysel, preventing him from joining the line of defense,” while also pointing out that the Crusaders’ back row had suffered only “a minor injury to his mouth.”

The entry level of the offence was categorised as mid-level, which carries a five-week suspension, mainly because of the use of a boot in the “head/face area of a player in a vulnerable position on the ground.”

Deysel’s suspension was reduced to three weeks because the Sharks man apologised to Taufua after the match, has an “exceptionally good record” over his career, and pleaded guilty while showing “genuine remorse” for his actions.
