I loved the way they (Civil Defence) had to keep running from the Lansdowne Rd end to the Havelock square end. They were shattered :)

Paul, As one of the members who was running from the lansdown end to the havelock square end all night last night, I would just like to point out we had members positioned at the havelock end and we where responding in support due to A) The sheer number of flares, a crew can only put out so many alone B) Due to the level of risk of injury from a given situation. such as flares setting flags on fire etc,

And in response to the asking nicely to extinguise their flares, thats not the full truth I would like to see how you approuce a huge crowd of fans when they have a flare which can cause serious damage.

All CD crews did a great job last night and are a credit to the Org and as barry said they are all volunteers.

There was searches but they were like a half hearted grope on the Luas .

It’s because stop and search is not necessary arresting them. They probably grabbed in region of 30 people and released right away after talking to them. Most stubborn / drunk were arrested and it was number 3 :)

Well tbf, there was 8 Flares going at the same time at one point in the Lower East Stand, 4 in the top east stand and numerous ones throughout the game from 15 minutes in…. So not a couple. Also There was a huge polish Flag that passed safely around the entire stadium until it got to the lower End northside and there was a bunch of idiots lighting the flairs underneath it. Pure Geniuses…….

Saw that with the flag, was a nervous moment. Other than that the other flares were harmless enough. Most grounds in Europe have them every week (including Ireland).

I still think its an overreaction. This wouldn’t have made the news if it was the Irish fans (the bestest fans in the world TM).

You get idiots everywhere. You only have too look at the state of the square in Gdansk after an Irish drinking session there before the Spain game.

I’m not sure how reporting the facts of an event can be considered ‘sensationalist nonsense’. If anything, the piece sought to correct the sensationalist nonsense in the form of misguided reports suggesting that at least 30 fans had been arrested.

Ok I was unfair in my statement. Reading it again I apologise. Having Read the journal over the past number of days I’ve seen so many racist comments – foreign, taxi drivers etc. I just saw this as a potential invite to the usual. The original story was perhaps a more suitable target for my comment.

They were expecting something as there were “Euro Police” (on their blue high vis vests) outside the stadium. It looked to me that they were only searching the unruly types of Polish chppies, as me and my three lads were waved thru twice!

Obviously they didnt search very well. There must have been 20 or 30 flares lit and another 10 or so loud “firecracker” type things.

Those that arrived late had some job trying to get some of the Polish fans out of their seats (serves them right), We were in the East stand lower surrounded by red and white and they were briiliant. Us 3 eegits lepping around when we scored and a ton of handshakes at the end.

Them Polish women are a fine lot!

Country of origin does not determine Race! I believe the word you were looking for is Xenophobia. Which I don’t think is the case here. If Irish fans were breaking the law, they too would have been arrested. I don’t imagine the Gardai were asking for passports before they made any arrests.
