Thomas Barr stuns reigning world champion to clinch 400m hurdles crown

The Waterford native broke the Irish record back in May and continues to impress on the track.

WATERFORD ATHLETE THOMAS BARR stunned world champion Jehue Gordon to win the 400-metre hurdles at the Morton Games this evening.

The 21-year-old kept with Gordon, who was the star attraction in Santry today, and powered past him down the closing straight. Gordon, from Trinidad, claimed his world title in 2013 [with a time of 47.69] but had no answer to his Irish opponent’s burst over the final 50 metres.

Barr is Europe’s third fastest hurdler this year and, on 30 May, broke the Irish 400m hurdles record. In just his second race of the year, in Oordegem, Blgium, Barr ran 49:61 to break an 18-year record.

That record was well and truly smashed in Geneva, last month, as he won in a time of 48.90. He completed this evening’s race in a blistering time of 48.94 seconds.

Barr’s sister, Jessie Barr is also a track athlete with Ireland. She represented her country in the 4x400m at London 2012.
