MATTHEW MACKLIN RECKONS a win in New York on St Patrick’s Day will change his life.
The Irish middleweight takes on title-holder Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden on Saturday week.
“I think it would be a life changing win without a doubt,” Macklin told Eoin McDevitt on Off The Ball last night.
“This is the one that I want to change my career and change my life. This one could put you in that category where you can really do well out of the sport, really do well for yourself, well for those around you and secure your future.
“The scene is set, a good performance and a good win here and things could just explode overnight.”
Macklin — who will have Tipperary hurlers Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett at ringside — goes into the bout against the WBC Diamond champion as the undoubted underdog, though he insists he’s confident and doesn’t pay heed to online chatter in the build-up to fight nights.
“There are a lot of people giving me a chance in this fight,” he said. “Big, big people within boxing here in America whose opinions would kind of be seen as expert or whatever… they give me a very real chance.
“They don’t see it as the one-sided fight some of your internet type, forum guys see it. They go with the hype and the media and the media can build you into a monster and they have with Martinez. But he’s certainly not a monster; he’s just a man.”
The fight will be televised by HBO, who have released this promo, in the meantime:
