Think before you tweet: sports stars all a-Twitter

As one GAA star prepares to explain his decision to tweet his ‘disillusionment’ on TV tomorrow, we click back through more controversial updates.

RTÉ HAVE ANNOUNCED that Laois footballer MJ Tierney will be a guest on their new mid-week GAA magazine programme, The Committee Room.

Tierney was an unused sub in the game with Dublin at Croke Park on Sunday. His one-word tweet: disillisioned, casued some controversy.

And he has since defended this right to air his grievances on the website, lashing out at the Sunday Game.

RTÉ pundit Kevin McStay suggested that the Laois forward should keep his opinions to himself after Des Cahill – a Twitter follower of Tierney’s – read out the message.

He’s not the first athlete to Tweet himself into controversy. You can do a lot of damage with 140 characters as these sports stars soon realised.

  • Ryan Babel (formerly Liverpool)

Ryan Babel did not take Liverpool's 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United well. After referee Howard Webb awarded United a first-minute penalty which would prove to be the game's only goal, Babel tweeted this impressively-Photoshopped pic. The winger was fined £10000 which I presume he paid before moving on to Hoffenheim at the end of January.
  • Rory McIlroy

McIlroy's golf buddy Ian Poulter and lovable soccer rogue Robbie Savage were having a bit of back-and-forth on Twitter when young Rory popped in to say hello. Savage was less than happy when his young son asked what a twat was ...
  • Jamie Heaslip (Leinster and Ireland)

Prolific Tweeter Jamie Heaslip came under a bit of pressure in January after he prematurely confirmed that he would not be playing in Leinster's Heineken Cup clash against Saracens. Coach Joe Schmidt didn't seem too concerned however, assuring reporters that he would ask his kids to explain "the Twitter" to him when he got home.
  • Stevie Johnson (Buffalo Bills)

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson reckons that God is a Twitter user. Rather than using any of the more conventional routes, Johnson tweeted his displeasure with the big man after he dropped a pass in the end zone. (Johnson, that is. God doesn't drop passes.)
  • Danny Care (Harlequins & England)

Danny Care obviously felt that his Harlequins side were the victims of a little bit of refereeing injustice when they lost 18-13 to Leicester in an Aviva Premiership game in November. The 23-year-old scrum-half used Twitter to ask “does Wayne Barnes want to give any more shocking decisions to help the Leicester home team out?!! No shock there!!” Care wasn't finished at that, subsequently tweeting “Wayne Barnes…hang your head pal!! Reward the team who want to play rugby, not just kick penalties!!!”
  • Glen Johnson (Liverpool)

Glen Johnson seems to have gotten a little bit upset after Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson claimed that the Liverpool defender "couldn't defend for toffee". His response may have crossed one or two lines though. “Comments from alcoholic drug abusers are not really gonna upset me and who is Paul Merson to judge players, he was average at the best of times. The only reason he’s on that show is coz he gambled all his money away. The clown!"
  • Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere wasn't too impressed by Phil Dowd's apparent inconsistency when Arsenal threw away a 4-0 lead against Newcastle last season. Fortunately for him, he escaped without a fine.
  • Marvin Morgan (Aldershot Town)

After supporters voiced their displeasure at Aldershot's 2-1 defeat to Hereford, striker Marvin Morgan's used Twitter to air his response. "Like to thank the fans who booed me off the pitch. Where's that going to get you! I hope you all die." Unsurprisingly, Morgan was suspended and transfer-listed shortly thereafter.
  • Ty Lawson (Denver Nuggets)

This one was apparently sent out from Denver Nuggets' star Ty Lawson's account. For those not up to scratch on the Kardashian's private lives, Kim was dating NFL star Reggie Bush while younger sister Khloe is married to Lamar Odom of the LA Lakers. Bush won the Superbowl in 2010, while Odom won his second NBA ring last year. Coincidence? Lawson thinks not.
  • Caroline Wozniacki

This one speaks for itself really ... “Enjoying an evening on the couch! But feeling hungry all the time! Not sure if I’m actually hungry or if I just need something in my mouth!
