The Ronaldo debate: Is he a good player or a great player?

Giles, Dunphy and Sadlier weigh in with their thoughts on Portugal’s talisman.

FEW WOULD ARGUE that Cristiano Ronaldo is the single most talented player at this summer’s European championships and, with Lionel Messi’s Barcelona missing out on La Liga and Champions League success last season, leading his Portugal team to victory over holders Spain would further strengthen his claim for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

After the Real Madrid scoring phenomenon headed home the winner against the Czech Republic last week, the RTE panel discussed their feelings on whether Ronaldo deserves to be placed alongside the all-time footballing greats.

Eamon Dunphy, who was often critical of the player during his Manchester United days, finally seems convinced of his brilliance but, along with elder statesman Giles, still feels Ronaldo lets himself down by showing petulance and failing to track back to help out his team-mates at times.

Sadlier added: “He is the best in the tournament on his day. He has flaws, weaknesses and things that would drive you mad but you would want him in your team.”

  • Ronaldo has won everything on an individual and club level, his goal scoring is absolutely out of this world, and he could easily go down as one of the best players of all time. He was Uniteds talisman during a fantastic period of success between 2006-2009. You only have to look at United now to see what a difference he made to us. The guy scores almost every game for both club and country over the last 3/4 years. The guy is a phenomenon.

I absolutely can’t stand John Giles, he loves himself far too much and his comments are completely out of touch. Giles absolutely worships the likes of Rooney, but I know who I’d far prefer to have at United and thats Ronaldo. There is not a team in the world who wouldn’t want Ronaldo in their team. He didn’t track back much at United or at Madrid, the others players are happy to do that when he scores the goals…..and he does that in abundance.

At least Dunphy has come around to the fact Ronaldo is an incredible player. Sadlier criticizing Ronaldo for weaknesses is hilarious too.

    Viva Ronaldo!!

    • I don’t think anyone was questioning his skill, the discussion was more to do with his legacy as a “great footballer”, which unfortunately incorporates more than just technical ability.
Compare him to messi and its not as clear cut as your saying

    • Adrian Messi is not without his faults over however few they may be. In terms of stats and goals they are almost neck and neck. The two are out of this world! The only main difference is Ronaldo is arrogant and Messi isn’t. I’m not comparing them, thats a side argument.

Not just on Ronaldo, I just can’t stand the Giles etc, they have this “greater then thou” attitude in that that believe themselves to be the best pundits about, yet they often chat as much sh*te as the rest of them. I remember watchi the Jonny Giles late late special and couldn’t get over how cocky and arrogant he was. Thank god I don’t live in Ireland anymore to pay my licence fee for that sh*te.
