1.# MEDAL RUSH Ireland’s success at the 2012 Paralympics continued yesterday as Helen Kearney and Orla Barry added two more medals to the haul, taking the team to 10 in total and 14th in the overall medal table.

Kearney won bronze in the Individual Freestyle equestrian test, her third medal of the Games adding to the individual silver and team bronze she had already collected.

Barry won bronze in the women’s discus F57/58 final at the Olympic Stadium last night. Her first throw of 28.12 ranked her in third position but she could not improve further in the medal throw-off.

2. #COYBIG Giovanni Trapattoni and the Republic of Ireland squad fly out to Astana this afternoon ahead of Friday’s opening World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan. Indications are that both Simon Cox will start on Friday with Jonathan Walters partnering Robbie Keane up front, but doubts persist over the fitness of James McClean. The Sunderland midfielder has been struggling with illness.

3. #WEXFORD GAA Jason Ryan last night stepped down as Wexford manager, bringing an end to five years in charge of the county’s senior footballers. Ryan led Wexford to the Leinster final in 2008 and again in 2011, as well as an All-Ireland semi-final in 2008.

4. #US OPEN Defending women’s champion Samantha Stosur is out of the US Open. The Australian was beaten by top seed Victoria Azarenka in their quarter-final on a rain-hit Tuesday in New York.

5. #RYDER CUP Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Steve Stricker were named yesterday as Davis Love III’s captain’s picks for the US Ryder Cup team. Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler and Nick Watney were among the big names to miss out on a wildcard nod for the match in Chicago later this month.
