1. #SIX NATIONS Ireland began their Six Nations campaign with a hugely disappointing defeat to Wales at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

Leigh Halfpenny kicked a late winning penalty effort. Afterwards, Declan Kidney insisted lessons would be learned while Paul O’Connell said the players would get themselves up for France in five days’ time.

2. #GAA The Gaelic football season swung back into action this weekend with a bang. Yesterday, Cork took a point away from Armagh despite Paul Kerrigan’s contentious red card. The Rebels began their league defence with a 0-10 to 1-7 result.

5. #ATHLETICS Ireland’s Ciarán Ó’Lionaird had a memorable night in Massachusetts on Saturday, winning the New Balance Boston Grand Prix in a time of 3:56.01 minutes. The Leevale AC runner ran a fine tactical race throughout, moving clear in the last 200 metres to beat Taylor Milne of Canada into second place.

British world champion Mo Farah could only finish fourth after he suffered a bad fall early in the race.

6. #FORE! Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie chipped in for an eagle and a birdie on his way to winning the wind-shortened Qatar Open on Sunday, shooting a 7-under 65 to hold off Jason Day and Peter Hanson.
