Texas (hopefully not) Forever: McMahon takes up coveted US scholarship

The Co. Down Olympian will be studying in Texas A&M next semester.

SYCERIKA MCMAHON, IRISH swimming champion over multiple distances, yesterday announced that she had accepted a university scholarship in the USA.

McMahon will study, train and compete under the banner of Texas A&M, a school renowned for its athletic programme.

The 17-year-old Down athlete produced some promising displays at London 2012 and continued her dominance of the Irish circuit at this weekendโ€™s national championships.

McMahon managed second place behind Hungaryโ€™s world champion Katinka Hosszu in todayโ€™s womenโ€™s 200 m individual medley, but that silver was her sixth national title of the weekend, adding to her status as Irelandโ€™s leader over 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle; 200m butterfly and 400 IM.
