Take a bow, son: here are your nominees for the 2011 goal of the year

The FIFA shortlist for the prestigious prize has been narrowed down to a shortlist of three contenders.

THE SHORTLIST FOR the 2011 goal of the year has been announced.

The nominees include Wayne Rooney’s memorable overhead kick against Man City, Lionel Messi’s exquisite chip in his side’s Champions League encounter with Arsenal and Neymar’s wonderful solo effort against Flamengo.

Interestingly, FIFA have gone with Messi’s goal against Arsenal despite it missing out on the recent list of the 20 most memorable moments in Champions League history, while his arguably superior effort in last season’s Champions League against Real Madrid came 6th.

The winner of the award will be announced on January 9, when the recipient of the 2011 Ballon d’Or will also be confirmed.
