Sycerika McMahon makes Euro final as Barry Murphy breaks national record

The Belfast swimmer will compete in the final of the Women’s 100m Breaststroke on Sunday.

BARRY MURPHY AND Sycerika McMahon were the Irish stars in Chartres, France on day three of the European Short Course Swimming Championships.

McMahon continued with her superb form as she set a new Irish Senior Record in the heats of the 100m Breaststroke this morning where she qualified third into the semi-final.

The Belfast swimmer’s time of 1:06.89 knocked another of Fiona Doyle’s Breaststroke records from the books.

The Leander ASC swimmer then went on to lower the time in the semi-final when she touched in 1:06.46 to qualify in third place for Sunday’s final.

Some 20 minutes later, McMahon was competing in the 100m Individual Medley Final, where she clocked 1:01.12, set another Irish Senior Record and finished seventh overall.

In just three days the 17-year-old has won a Bronze medal, set eight Irish Senior Records and qualified for 3 European Finals.

Sixth for Murphy

Murphy, who has recently returned from the USA to train at the NAC High Performance Centre, finished in ninth place in the heats of the 50m Breaststroke in 27.05 to secure a spot in the evening semi-final.

The Dubliner put in an incredible performance in the semi-final to set a new Irish Senior Record of 26.66 and qualify for the evening final in sixth place.

There was another Irish record for the London Olympian in the final when he finished sixth overall in 26.60.  Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli won Gold in 26.18.

Brendan Hyland set another Irish Junior Record on the third day of the championships when he swam 1:59.73 in the 200m Butterfly Heats.

The rising star has four Junior records to his name so far this week.

Clodagh Flood (1:02.61), Jane Roberts (1:02.91) and Sarah Kelly (1:05.21) all set personal bests in the 100m Butterfly heats as did Brendan Gibbons (15:32.62) in the 1500m Freestyle.
