Sweet deal: Gibson confirmed as a Toffee

The 24-year-old Irish midfielder has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Everton.

DARRON GIBSON HAS made the move to Everton, it has been confirmed.

The 24-year-old has signed a 4-and-a-half-year deal with the Toffees after passing a medical last night and Manchester United will receive an undisclosed fee, which is believed to be in the region of €2m, for the midfielder.

He becomes the second player to join the club during this transfer window following Landon Donovan’s short-term loan from LA Galaxy.

It’s a great club with great fans and hopefully I can improve Everton,” he said on their website. “I think I’m a goalscoring midfielder and hopefully I can get a few goals.”

Gibson, who was out of contract at the end of the season, leaves Old Trafford having had a particularly frustrating season so far.

His first Premier League start only arrived on St Stephen’s Day and he has not featured for United since after being disciplined by the club for his actions later that night.

He had also become the butt of some United fans’ jokes who didn’t rate him as being talented enough to play for the Premier League champions.

A look at their official Facebook page, where nearly 17,000 fans have ‘liked’ the news, may suggest that many believe his departure is for the best.

I was very frustrated [at Manchester United],” he added. “I think it was the right time for me to move on and I’m looking forward to my time here.”

The switch could be a major boost for Gibson’s chances of playing at this summer’s European Championships if he can get regular game-time with David Moyes’s men.

Everton’s website revealed that the Derry-born player will wear the number 4 shirt and he could be in line to face Robbie Keane’s Aston Villa tomorrow.

Gibson will also link up with former United players such as Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Louis Saha.

French striker Saha welcomed his move by tweeting the shout which was often heard ringing around Old Trafford when Gibson, who is known for having a powerful shot, came into possession in the opposition’s half.

best of luck to him. he never did an awful lot wrong as a united player but he didnt do enough right. he is unfortunate to not be good enough to play at uniteds level. having said that in recent seasons Fergie has not put the effort into developing the young players, despite the supposed talent in the youth ranks. bringing back scholes may be the final straw for players like gibson, anderson, ravel morrison and paul pogba. In the past fergie would bleed through a youth wheras now he buys young talent from other clubs(de gea, smalling, jones, all young and high transfer feed) while letting the youths in the academy get frustrated and leave(Pique!, Rossi!).
The old trafford ethos is ingrained in players like Scholes, giggs etc as they are at the club from about 13-15 years of age, some younger. Same said for the core of Barcas wonderteam, iniesta, messi, xavi are there since they were kids.

Anyway, best of luck to gibson, hopefully he will mature into a decent midfield player and offer Ireland another badly needed option in the middle coming into the Euro’s

About time he started to show some ambition and now that he has a realistic chance of first team football, I wish him well.

As a fellow Derry-man I can’t help but feel put out by the choice of headline on Everton’s official site: http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/2012/01/13/gibson-signs-on

He’ll be found out. No way worth 2 million. A one trick pony that is shoot. If Moyes can teach him how to pass and tackle then he MAY have a player. Gotta question his attitude too if he was willing to warm the bench and count his money at United for so long. Hope I’m wrong tho

No you are right. Moyes has bought a complete turkey here. Too slow as well and is terrible at reading the flow of the match. Brainless. League 1 player at best or the scottish premier league with celtic.
