All the speculation, hype and build-up is finally over and it’s time to play some football.

The Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers. John Harbaugh takes on his brother, Jim. We take on a massive bowl of popcorn mixed with Taytos.

What an incredible game. As great a rollercoaster ride as you’ll find in any sport.

And for any whingers complaining about the length of time it takes, it’s just the way the sport is. And in this case tonight, it added to the occasion! Roll on pre-season in August!

  It is not the way the sport is. College football, almost equally as popular, has the same stoppages but is a lot more continuous. Its pure comercialism and any American will tell u that.

  College football is just as stop-start, bar the two minute warning at the end of each half and takes up roughly the same amount of time as a regular NFL game. The Super Bowl is just that bit longer because of the half-time show, along with pre-game and post-game activities.

Really disappointed with the 49ers. Been a giants fan I was watching as a neutral but this is awful. Especially after watching the 6 nations all weekend. Will be letting my Irish-American buddies know what they’re missin out on!

  Sean, no Irish channel showing it but it can be viewed on sky and BBC. sky coverage not too bad, don’t know what the BBC coverage will be like, they only show the final while sky have had some great coverage of most games. The presenter chat during some of the adverts you would see but there are still a fair amount of ads shown here too :(

  @Elizabeth, For the season just gone sky aired thursday, & 2 x early sunday games & post season. Channel4 aired Sunday Night Football & BBC show Monday night football. BBC & sky aired the superbowl.
  
  Dont know what the setup for the new season will be. Mike Carlson (C4/BBC) & Jeff Rheinbold are the best experts imo.

  I’m being facetious but only mildly. I was reading something recently which stated the reason for head injuries in American football is their propensity to tackle head on rather than shoulder on as in rugby, hence the padding. However in rugby it’s full on 80 minutes of sustained hardcore physical activity which just doesn’t happen in American football. Put it this way, take the padding off these lads and send them out with a decent rugby or GAA side and I think they’d be crying for their nmammies in the first (unstopped, no breaks, no padding) quarter. Anyone remember the ‘Friends’ rugby episode? That.

  The trophy for the Super Bowl is not crystal. You are thinking of the MVP trophy which is Waterford crystal. Not sure about Alabama as they don’t have a NFL team.

  When you’re used to European football/rugby it’s truly mind boggling how long American football takes. The fact it’s an hour long game allotted FIVE hours in the schedule says it all
