AFTER CONFIRMING HE is indeed set to move to the MLS when his Liverpool contract finishes at the end of the season, Steven Gerrard is on the verge of signing a multi-million dollar contract with LA Galaxy, according to reports this evening.
ESPN believe Gerrard will join the MLS champions on an 18-month contract and earn $6 million a year to become the league’s highest paid player.
With league rules only allowing each franchise three Designated Players (DP) in their squad, Gerrard is expected to become Galaxy’s third DP following the retirement of long-serving midfielder Landon Donavon.
Robbie Keane, who won the MLS MVP award last term, and defender Omar Gonzalez are Galaxy’s two DPs at present.
The rules state that those three players are allowed earn more than the league’s salary cap. Last season, Irish captain Keane was reported to be earning a little over $4 million which equates to €3.3 million. During his spell in America, David Beckham’s contract was worth around $6.5 million each year.
Gerrard would be able to join Galaxy in July when the transfer window in America opens and ESPN are also reporting that the former England international’s move to Bruce Arena’s side needed approval from the MLS Board of Governors because the league will pay $750,000 of Gerrard’s deal.
