LATER IN 2015, we’ll have to start getting used to the sight of Steven Gerrard wearing a jersey of someone other that Liverpool and England – most likely one embossed with an ‘MLS’ and an ‘LA’ instead of the liver bird.
It’s been an emotional journey for Gerrard in red, here’s a few snapshots of his time as Liverpool’s captain, leader, legend.

Steven Gerrard: Liverpool legend
Peter Byrne
Peter Byrne
What was your fondest memory of the Gerrard years?
The brainpower and originality of some people continues to underwhelm …his slip should not define his career no more than Keanes exit from United define his career…Gerard’s slip did not cost them the league title, it was their excuse for a defence over the course of the season
He should go and play without the pressure of being Liverpool football clubs main man and golden boy…bought about by world class talent.
On the final day of the season….Houllier, King Kenny,Rafa and Rodgers should shoulder him off the field for carrying their mostly average-(at best )good teams in which he mostly carried himself.
One club man….could have gone to any club in the world and won a lot more, but stayed and still won well with his hometown club.
My favourite moment personally was when he scored a penalty at United and kiss the camera for a bet. He is the reason that liverpool football club has still so many of its traditions. He is a true red man, and without him it won’t be the same. May be good for results etc but is there ever going to be another leader like him
Been a super star playing with your hometown team, every boys dream..not many have done it..stuck with them in the bad times..all good things must come to an end.
My hero growing up. Read his autobiography 3 times when I was 12. Had his name on all my jerseys. Not easy being a 20 year old LFC fan, growing up in a time of United domination. But Stevie made us Champions of Europe one time and it was one of the greatest nights of my life! No matter where he goes he’ll always be a red.
Didn’t say he was a bad footballer. It’s just from Saipan, numerous disgusting tackles, a shocking managerial career and an even worse vice managerial career, two hate-filled autobiographies and several attention-grabbing bust ups, it can be said that Roy Keane isn’t the smartest of lads out there.
A grear player who had a tedency to over complicate things and be very selfish; playing 50 yard diagonal balls when a short pass is on, or shooting from 40 yards to try and turn a game around.
No doubting though, an exceptional player who loved a big occassion. The finals against West Ham and Milan are testament to that.
@ Christy Dolan:
I think you’ll find the true reason why Liverpool lost the league was due to Brendan Rodgers smugness and naivety. Against Chelsea it was clear all they had to do was allow Chelsea to sit deep, keep possession and maybe grab a goal from a set piece as it was clear mourinho had no ambition of attacking and going for the win with his 2 banks of 5(Ba Was reguarly the only Chelsea player in the liverpool half) but Rodgers pushed up,played a high line, push up and go all out attack, tried to out smart probably the greatest defensive tactician in world football. Against Palace at 3-0 up,Rodgers decided to try go after the goal difference instead of taking the 3 points, his substitutes were shocking, again he went all out attack, played a high line, pushed everyone forward and subsequently drew 3-3,cost his team the league but still allows Gerrard to take the fall for it. Rodgers is a poor manager, bad in the transfer market, doesn’t know how to set up a defence and is punching way above his weight,He was lucky to have a player like Suarezto paper over the cracks but now he’s gone Rodgers is being found out again.
I’d agree it was a bit of mess against Chelsea, even watching it I felt Liverpool were pushing too much unnecessarily. It was obvious what jose wanted to do.
Personally…I felt when Henderson got sent off at death versus city was a big turner. Thought at the time…that it may be costly. He was on fire and badly missed in the following games(unlike this season).
It’s a shame to see him not finish his career with Liverpool. But what really annoys me is to other clubs he’ll be remembered for the slip and never winning a league title. All the best to him wherever he goes.
Err you don’t really get what the ‘tinted glasses’ saying means do you? But in a way you are right Liverpool fans will and always have seen his career through red tinted glasses…
Every fan of every club has tinted glasses, nobody can deny that. Many of the players mentioned are greats, but you can always think of the negatives, it comes with all those players, Keane, Scholes, horrendous tackles, Gerard, slip, Zidane, headbutt, I will remember Shearer threatening the FA, Beckham did many great things, but that WC kick….. Its footie and banter, part and parcel of the game….
Seeing Gerrard as one of the worlds best midfielders is ‘tinted’. That’s not ‘anti-Liverpool’ or anything. Just look at England career – completely out of his dept his whole career. Every World Cup and every euro championship passed him by and was shown up. Seems like a decent guy but limited footballer.
Alex, I would say every english great player has never played to there best for England as every english manager never plays the player in the position they excel in…. Never…. Especially midfield…..
What has Rooney done for England? What about Lampard? Even Shearer, all have not set the world on fire, sure, sometimes they qualify well, but the tournies? Disaster after disaster….
Wayne Rooney is third highest goalscorer off all time for England and Sherear has a goal every two game record internationally. Both constantly performed. So stop trying to blame mangers, positioning etc. Gerrard was shown up in EVERY tournament he played in.
Alex if I was a striker that was capped almost 100 times by england and being spoon fed by Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Gascoigne etc, trust me I would be banging on Bobby Charltons record as well! In your opinion every midfielder since Charlton would be underachievers! Just give credit where it’s due and have a happy new year!
Btw he was England’s best player in their last 2 tournaments. While Rooney was mouthing off his own fans into the camera, Gerrard was the only one who showed any heart towards the cause!
Rooney’s England memories, insulting fans, getting caught out by Ronaldo and that corner, along with many goals against small countries. With your logic, Robbie Keane is an all time great.
Regardless, England have rarely played players to there strengths, no point in having Rooney up front if the team is not suited to get the ball to him….
United fans weren’t too happy with Keane 15 years ago when he was going through contract negotiations and there was talks of him going to Italy! United themselves came out the next season and said the up in season tickets was to accommodate Keanes new contract.
Once rejected by Wolves, he's now the 'heartbeat' of the best team in Europe

That goal against West Ham in the Fa Cup final…what a belter!
The brainpower and originality of some people continues to underwhelm …his slip should not define his career no more than Keanes exit from United define his career…Gerard’s slip did not cost them the league title, it was their excuse for a defence over the course of the season

One club man….could have gone to any club in the world and won a lot more, but stayed and still won well with his hometown club.
The slip did cost them the title – if the game finished 0-0 they would have won it with two wins against Palace and Newcastle.
Still remember his 1st goal v sheff wed,you knew he was goina be special
A sh!t keeper didn’t help much either to be honest. Nor did that off side decision on sterling against city.
Well said Ben
After scoring against Milan and lifting his his arms aloft signalling to the lads….we can do this.
And they did.
That famous slip?
Utd fan more interested in liverpool than his own club I bet
Bet he knows more about Liverpool then you do Darwin Doyle
Is that how you got over Paul Scholes’ retirements Bazinga?
My favourite moment personally was when he scored a penalty at United and kiss the camera for a bet. He is the reason that liverpool football club has still so many of its traditions. Good passer. Good attacking midfielder. Never a great. Hadn’t the smarts of a Keane, Viera etc
There isn’t an ounce of ‘smart’ in Roy Keane’s brain.
Enough of a brain to win multiple league titles…
Hadn’t the ability to purposely break another professional footballers leg either, did he Paul???
When Fergie could outbid all other clubs for top players. City and Chelsea playing that card now.
He’s still smarter, richer and more successful then youll ever be derek!
Who broke whose leg??
Has to be champions league final all the great player and I think he is the only one that has score in all the finals he has been to
This gonna be like the last 6 months of BOD all over again…
A grear player who had a tedency to over complicate things and be very selfish; playing 50 yard diagonal balls when a short pass is on, or shooting from 40 yards to try and turn a game around.

One of the best all round midfield players ever a class act
It’s a shame to see him not finish his career with Liverpool. But what really annoys me is to other clubs he’ll be remembered for the slip and never winning a league title. All the best to him wherever he goes.
Depends. My memory will be the 2006 FA Cup final. What if he wrapped up with another FA Cup win?
The slip will always be remembered but give it time and the cream will rise! People will remember him with red tinted glasses!
Err you don’t really get what the ‘tinted glasses’ saying means do you? But in a way you are right Liverpool fans will and always have seen his career through red tinted glasses…

Wayne Rooney is third highest goalscorer off all time for England and Sherear has a goal every two game record internationally. Both constantly performed. So stop trying to blame mangers, positioning etc. Gerrard was shown up in EVERY tournament he played in.
Going by your stats theory so…
Hes the third highest in all time appearances for England and has more goals than Beckham… Who has more appearances.
Just saying….you know.
Wha’?
Alex if I was a striker that was capped almost 100 times by england and being spoon fed by Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Gascoigne etc, trust me I would be banging on Bobby Charltons record as well! England’s best player in last two tournaments??? Ok, right…Rooney spoon feed goals…easy. Right lads im off – your all 5 years olds
Alex, give me examples where Gerrard was shown up while your fav players excelled.
