Kilcormac-Killoughey (Offaly) 1-9

ST THOMAS BECAME the seventh Galway club to lift the All-Ireland senior hurling crown with a two-point success against Offaly champions Kilcormac-Killoughey in Croke Park this afternoon.

In a tight and low-scoring encounter played in difficult conditions, St Thomas hit four points without reply in the final quarter to secure glory.

Kilcormac-Killoughey received a setback in the 53rd minute when Killian Leonard was controversially sent-off after a pull across St Thomas Darragh Burke as he emerged with the ball from defence.

And their woes were compounded minutes later when their other midfielder Mark Leonard received his second yellow card of the game as they finished with 13 men.

St Thomas took advantage with a brace of points apiece from experienced attacker Richie Murray and Galway senior Conor Cooney helping them secure the honours.

It was St Thomas who lead at the break by 1-7 to 1-5 after Murray had found the net for them from a rebound when Cooney’s drive from a 20-yard free was blocked on the line.

Kilcormac-Killoughey’s goal arrived courtesy of Trevor Fletcher, parachuted into the side after Daniel Currams was ruled out through injury, when he booted to the net after seizing a breaking ball.

Kilcormac-Killoughey who had captain and ace marksman Ciaran Slevin in splendid scoring form up front as he shot 0-8, went in front by 1-9 to 1-7 by the third quarter mark.

But they suffered from a lack of scores from play, only 1-1 during the game, and just two players who got on the scoresheet – Slevin and Fletcher.

In contrast St Thomas registered 1-8 from play with six different players contributing to their overall total. And it was Murray and Cooney who made the match-winning contributions to secure a memorable success for the Peterswell-Kilchreest combination.

  • Disgraceful referring ruined this game!
A straight red for a soft touch on the arm! An absolute joke!

  • Yep exactly! KK haven’t pulled a bad stroke all year!

St Thomas’s are a very good team! But I think we were on top in the second half until Cillian Leonard got sent off!
I heard the ref was bad but that’s a disgrace!

A game should never Be decided on bad refereeing

    The players don’t deserve that!

  • the first red may have been harsh but the momentum was with Thomas’ before any kk player was sent off. To suggest any of these players are being influenced to dive either by club or county managers is absolute ignorance. They are encouraged to take their player on, run straight through the middle to attack and score…that’s not indiscipline on their part if they’re fouled by players of the opposition. Ref was entirely inconsistent. Let three high tackles in the first half go. Nevertheless, thoms had the momentum as soon as Éanna Burke came on, and KK can’t expect to win when almost entirely dependent on frees.

  • Unbelievably sour comment there from Mr. Flashheart, The ref was poor but the red cards were correct.I could hear the slap Darragh Burke got from my seat on the Cusack. The second red was for a second yellow which was also a correct decision. The best team won.

  • The St.Thomas guy acted like Drogba when he got the tap on the arm. This probably influenced the bad ref decision. It turned the game on its head.

  • The red card was correct??! Is that a joke! The player acted as if he’d be shot! Ridiculous sending off by a useless referee! When a ref ruins a game and influences the game in such a manner then it does tarnish the result!

St Thomas’s are a great team, but diving through out the game was obvious! The ref killed any momentum KK had.

    • Check the rules , striking with the hurl is a red card, shoulder to chest is at least a yellow.Sexton let KK away with a lot of fouls up to the 53rd minute. At the end of the day the better hurlers won.

  • A Tarnished medal for the Galway lads, disgraceful reffing by Sexton, some of those cards werent even fouls. Refs are destroying hurling.

David Burke dived twice to get the Offaly midfielder yellow and red carded, disgraceful from an all star, who hid all game long. Anthony Cunninghams influence on him coming through, continuing the unsporting behaviour of Galway that was introduced last year.

    A black day for hurling.
