Four-star Dundalk overcome hapless Pat's

Stephen Kenny’s side got partial revenge over their opponents, after they were beaten in the title race by them last year.

St Patrick’s Athletic 1

Dundalk 4

FOUR SUBLIME STRIKES earned Dundalk all three points in their clash with current Airtricity League champions St Patrick’s Athletic tonight in Richmond Park, as Stephen Kenny’s side ran out 4-1 winners.

The Inchicore outfit had taken the lead in the first half somewhat against the run of play when Chris Forrester pounced on some poor control from Brian Gartland.

Peter Cherrie had come away from his goal to claim the ball, but his defender chose to clear his lines and paid the ultimate price as Forrester stuck the ball between Gartland’s legs and into the empty net.

Dundalk had dominated for long periods in the first half, and they continued to press in the second before they equalised through John Mountney when he blasted a low free-kick past Clarke.

That strike only further increased the visitor’s belief, and when the ball was squared to Daryl Horgan 11 minutes later he made no mistake with a cultured shot that nestled in the corner to complete the comeback.

Greg Bolger then saw a straight red for the champions for a lunge on Andy Boyle and Dundalk substitute, David McMillan then completed the trio of long-range strikes with a thumping shot from 25-yards.

With St Pat’s well beaten, Horgan, who was the catalyst for much of their good play, picked out Gannon arriving at the back post and the right-back side-footed a volley back across the box and into the goal.

St Pat’s ended the night with Killian Brennan receiving a second yellow as he argued with the referee after the final whistle.
