Saints go top with win in Derry as Sligo held by Drogs

St Pat’s are back on top of the league.

TONIGHT COULD BE considered a pretty important one when all is said on done in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

St Patrick’s Athletic returned to the top of the table thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandwell.

Killian Brennan broke the deadlock for Pat’s after just four minutes or so; he curled in a superb free-kick from the edge of the box.

There was some 10 minutes of added time at the end of the game after Stephen Maher was injured, causing a long delay.

Elsewhere, Sligo Rovers could only earn a point away to Drogheda United, and they now look to have a tough battle on their hands.

The home side took the lead midway through the first half, with Paul O’Connor turning in a Shane Grimes cross. The Bit O’ Red levelled it up after 50 minutes through David Cawley.

Ian Baraclough’s are now seven points behind St Pat’s, with the Inchicore outfit two betters ahead of Dundalk in second.
