ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC are one win away from securing the Airtricity League title after a 3 — 1 win over UCD.
Robbie Benson put the Students 1 — 0 up after 23 minutes after he was played through on goal. The visitors rallied well, however, and hit back through Chris Forrester. The forward showed composure in front of goal to level affairs.
St Pat’s hit the front on 33 minutes when Forrester played in Anto Flood, who sized up the target before finishing past Mark McGinley. Settled by taking the lead, St Pat’s began to dominate possession.
UCD huffed and puffed at the beginning of the second-half but could not muster a shot on goal before the league leaders stretched their lead. Midfielder Jake Kelly cut in from his wing and his low drive did for McGinley.
Benson wasted UCD’s best opportunity to get a goal back but, in truth, St Pat’s looked comfortable in the final 20 minutes and are now on the brink of league success.
Derry City accounted for Shelbourne at the Brandywell. Michael Rafter netted a double in the first half after a Rory Patterson penalty had opened the scoring. Dean Kelly got a goal back for Shels but red cards for Brian Gannon and Robert Bayly saw them finish with nine men.
