Coolmore optimistic following life-saving surgery on St Nicholas Abbey

Star still has “many bridges to cross before he is considered out of danger,” Coolmore said in an update this morning.

COOLMORE’S MULTIPLE GROUP 1 winner St Nicholas Abbey is expected to remain in intensive care for some time following life-saving surgery yesterday.

Aidan O’Brien’s star colt suffered a career-ending injury this week and needed a lengthy operation in a bid to save him for stud.

Coolmore remain cautiously optimistic about his prospects and stressed today that the six-year-old “still has many bridges to cross before he is considered out of danger.”

A six-time Group 1 winner, St Nicholas Abbey was in final preparations for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes when he fractured his pastern during a routine piece of work at O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Yard on Tuesday.

The operation at Fethard Equine Hospital in Tipperary successfully fused the bone but a lot will now depend on the horse’s recovery.

“After a lengthy surgery to fuse the pastern St Nicholas Abbey is recuperating in intensive care at John Halley’s Fethard Equine Hospital,” Coolmore said in a statement this morning.

“Surgery was carried out at Fethard Equine Hospital in consultation with Dr Dean Richardson, Head of Surgery at New Bolton Centre Pennsylvania, along with Ger Kelly and Tom O’Brien.

St Nicholas Abbey will remain in intensive care for some time and has many bridges to cross before he is considered out of danger.

This morning he is well and comfortable and back enjoying his hay!

We are lucky he is so fit and has a marvellous attitude and temperament which will be vital for his long recovery.
