DUNGARVAN COLLEGES WON the Masita GAA All-Ireland senior Colleges senior hurling A championship for the very first time this afternoon, courtesy of a hard-fought victory over Kilkenny CBS at Semple Stadium.
Playing in their first Croke Cup decider, Dungarvan inflicted a second successive final defeat on Kilkenny CBS, in what was a repeat of last year’s quarter-final between the sides.
Kilkenny CBS played for the last 25 minutes of normal time – plus three extra added on for stoppages – with 14 players.
Full-back Evan Cody was dismissed for a wild swipe on Patrick Curran as Dungarvan’s superb forward bore down on goal in the 35th minute.
From the resultant penalty, Curran saw his effort saved by Kilkenny CBS defender Paddy Deegan.
Apart from that, Curran was the main threat for Dungarvan as the ace attacker finished with a personal tally of 0-9, including six points from placed balls.Curran rattled over six points in the opening half as Dungarvan, playing against the breeze in sunny Thurles, opened up a 1-8 to 1-3 interval lead.
Ryan Donnelly, scorer of two goals in this year’s Harty Cup final, netted in the 15th minute as he somehow bundled the ball over the line despite being grounded.
Kilkenny CBS hit back with a goal of their own within two minutes, as Laurence Power’s mistake allowed Paddy Cahill to profit.
But Power redeemed himself in the second half with some assured handling and one cracking save to deny Kevin Kenny.
Dungarvan, who registered 14 wides in total (eight in the first half) had other goal chances of their own.
From Curran’s handpass, midfielder Cormac Curran was smothered by CBS goalkeeper Darragh Holohan four minutes from time.
The red card was the correct call by referee Shane Hourigan but Kilkenny CBS were unhappy that the Limerick whistler allowed a Tadhg Burke challenge on Kenny to go unpunished seven minutes from time.
After receiving lengthy treatment, Kenny sat out the remainder of the game.

St Fergal’s (Rathdowney) 2-10
St Brigid’s (Loughrea) 0-13
ST Fergal’s, Rathdowney, staged a quite remarkable comeback to win this afternoon’s last-ever Masita GAA All-Ireland Vocational SAHC final in Thurles.
The Laois outfit came from ten points down against St Brigid’s of Loughrea, who were looking to claim a third successive crown.
The Galway boys were awarded the competition in the boardroom in 2012 after the abandonment of the semi-final between Nenagh VS and St Fergal’s – and they started as favourites to get the job done on the field of play.
At half-time at Semple Stadium today, a rampant St Brigid’s were 0-10 to 0-2 ahead and they extended that lead with the opening two points of the second half.
But for the remainder of the game, breeze-assisted St Fergal’s outscored their Galway opponents by 2-8 to 0-3.
Gavin Dunne was superb at centre back for St Fergal’s, who claimed the title for the second time, with their previous success achieved in 2006.
With four minutes remaining, St Fergal’s trailed by three points but Aidan Corby tied the game with a brilliantly-taken goal in the 56th minute.
And in the final minute of normal time, full-forward Daire Quinlan beat St Brigid’s full-back Garry McHugo to Robbie Phelan’s delivery before whopping home a winning goal.
In the first half, the St Brigid’s inside line of Daniel Nevin, top scorer Brian Molloy and Jamie Ryan notched 0-9 between them.
