Sports Film of the Week: Ireland’s Grand Slam Journey 2009

The memories will come flooding back.

Title: Ireland’s Grand Slam Journey 2009

Plot: We all remember it like it was yesterday. Ireland ended a 61-year wait to win the Grand Slam during a momentous month of Irish sport back in 2009.

An IFTA award-winning documentary produced and directed for RTÉ by Dave Berry and Nathan Nugent, it features footage of the games, from the win over France at Croke Park to that fateful day in Cardiff, with input from Declan Kidney, his coaching staff, the players and journalist Gerry Thornley.

Probably the best day in Irish sport, don’t forget Bernard Dunne who won the world title the same night! If Carlsberg did sporting nights…….

What?! Okay it was a great day for rugby as we hadn’t won the thing in so long, but in a competition that has only 5 other teams in it, 2 of whom, Italy and Scotland, it is a seriously minority sport and that Wales as a country of similar stature fairly routinely win, to say it was the greatest day in irish sport is perverse, what about global achievements in truly global sports; athletics, golf, soccer, “amateur” boxing etc

This was never released by RTE on DVD, they only had a match highlights thing. Shame, because it’s one of the best irish sporting moments ever.

One victory and we’re talking about next week being the Slam decider, the media and public need to calm down! One fifth of the job is done

It’s such an open race any team is in with a shout but I truly believe that if we come good on Sunday and that’s a lot to ask playing England with the great talent they have. But we have a brilliant team filled with players that have won the European cup 5 times! But it would be such a great way to say goodbye to the likes of bod, poc, rog and doc who have done just so much for our country. I’m not a betting man but if we play to our upmost best we can win this tournament. But on a side note drop that plank earls and replace with McFadden a utility back.
