Spanish season to start this weekend as strike action is settled

Barcelona, Real Madrid et al can look forward to league football once again as the second week of strikes in Spanish football is called off…

A SECOND WEEKEND of strike action has been averted in La Liga and the new season will get underway this Saturday, it has been confirmed.

The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) have finally come to an agreement with the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) over the payment of players’ wages.

According to the Sporting Life, the AFE wanted to ensure that players were protected over clubs going insolvent, with clubs in Spain owing around €50million in unpaid wages to more than 200 professional players from the end of last season.

A statement, released from the players’ side, confirms that a deal has been reached.

“The committee of the AFE and LFP have reached an agreement that ensured, through various means, the salaries of footballers,” read the statement.

“After the meeting today between the AFE and the LFP, the strike scheduled for Friday August 26, Saturday August 27, Sunday August 28 and Monday August 29 is off.”

The statement continued: “Here at the AFE, we thank for their understanding and patience all those who have been affected.”
