Someone’s set up a website counting down to the end of Declan Kidney’s contract

Haters gonna hate, Deccie.

KID6

SO THIS EXISTS now, Ireland.

Someone has set up the website TheKidneyClock.net to count down to the end of the the Ireland rugby coach’s contract. Can you guess how they feel about the Corkman?

  • Whether you want rid of DK or not, this kind of thing is not respectful and is out of sync with the way rugby and its fans tend to go about things…

While its been around for a while I’m surprised the score find it newsworthy now.

Before I get abused I too feel its time for DK to move on but for me the score is trying to appease the masses rather than present the news and facts in an unbiased manner and allow the reader to form and debate our own opinions. Its a shame as that’s normally the realm of tabloid ‘journalists’. Shame really as I think the score and journal are a great idea…

  • Why would someone do that? I’m no expert on rugby but I know that man has done a lot for the game in Ireland. Irish people are renowned for being good sports fans and getting behind their own. Disappointing to see such negativity

    • Well said! Man does deserve more respect then that

The clue is at the start of your second sentence “I’m no expert on rugby…”. I will start of by saying Kidney’s achievements with Munster in particular shouldn’t be knocked, but he is well passed his sell by date (2010) and many of Ireland’s current problems stem from his conservatism in selection and playing style.

I cannot think of fans of any other team, in rugby or any other sport, who would happily accept a manager sticking around long after his best because several years ago he won something. This is no different.

The IRFU were crazy to extend his contract before the last world cup. He should have gone at the end of that tournament and Ireland could have started to build towards the next RWC in 2015. Then such a website would never have appeared.

  • Think the clock is a bit cruel but I think Kidney has just come to the of the road as Ireland coach . It happens he should be thanked for the huge achievement as Irish coach but he should also know the writing is on the wall

  • You don’t win 2 Heineken cups and Ireland’s first Grand Slam in 60 years (and first championship win in 24 years) by being a bad coach!

I agree with you that O’Sullivan was a pretty successful coach – ironic that he was hounded out of the position by angry ‘fans’ after a 6 nations fourth place in the same way that Kidney is being hounded now. The only difference is that it got to the point where EOS eventually lost the dressing room whereas DK has the full backing of the players.

Its a bit trite to say that DK got lucky and that EOS set up the slam. Did he also get lucky for both HK’s?

    • Backing of the players? Ask Brian O’Driscoll if kidney has his backing.

Fairly silly statement really Chris – I think DK made a good call taking the captaincy off BOD – look at his subsequent performance when he was able to focus on his own game!

The squad have repeatedly said that they stand behind DK and have often defended him when he has come under pressure from so-called ‘fans’.

    • So O’Driscoll’s form is because of a masterstroke from kidney to take the captaincy from him. So tell me all those years as captain the burden didn’t seem to hamper his game that much.

No Chris, just a sensible coaching decision to get the best from his player. BOD had suffered a recent dip in form followed by injury. He was going to be in enough pressure on his first match back without the added pressure of captaincy, and DK just sought to allow him to concentrate solely on his own performance, which evidently worked as intended.
Either way, it doesn’t deflect from the main point that DK has the backing of the squad.

  • How disrespectful.. A small country who do battle above it weight and often come out on top..

    • When do we come out on top, we won a grand slam a few years back alright but I don’t remember us winning it before or since then! There’s about 10 top international teams and we regularly beat about 4 of them!

    • We actually do battle below our weight. We are one of the oldest rugby playing countries in the world with some of the best players. Being a small country doesn’t really matter when you consider New Zealand have a lower population than us.
Declan Kidney’s coaching is disrespectful to vast amount of talent we have in this country.

    • @Marius, interesting stat. IF it wasn’t for the small matter of the GAA games, and soccer being the biggest sports in the country. Ireland has a registered rugby playing poulation of around 40,000. England around 850,000 surprisingly enough and NZ around 150,000. If we were to use your misguided logic we are definitely punching WAY above our weight and Kidney is the best coach in world rugby.

    • @Paul. All I meant is that, with our history of being one of the first three countries in the world to play rugby, AND with the breadth of talent we have in our little country, we should be doing a hell of a lot better than we currently are in international matches/tournaments. Therefore I still feel that we are punching substantially below our weight.
Long story short, we should be doing a lot better. We can do a lot better. we have the players to challenge anyone. We just need the proper coaching and the right attitude. Neither is present with Declan Kidney
