Snooker wrap: World number one Selby suffers surprise loss

In addition, Ryan Day narrowly beat Ding Junhui, while Joe Perry thrashed Graeme Dott.

WORLD NUMBER ONE Mark Selby was eliminated in the World Snooker Championship this evening, losing 10-3 to Barry Hawkins.

Selby is one of several high-profile players to exit the competition in the first round, and his preparations were hampered by a neck injury that had limited his practice time.

Speaking following his loss, Selby told BBC Sport: “I’m happy I managed to get here and give myself a chance.”

Elsewhere today, Joe Perry thrashed Graeme Dott 10-1, while Ryan Day beat Ding Junhui in controversial circumstances.

In addition, Judd Trump triumphed 10-7 against Dominic Dale.

In the day’s other unfinished encounters, Ali Carter leads Mark Davis 4-1, while Mark Williams is currently beating Liu Chuang 6-3.
