Sligo Rovers sorry for damage to Glentoran fans' bus

The Airtricity League club have also offered to pay for the cleaning of the visiting supporters’ coach.

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE this evening apologised to Glentoran FC after a bus used by travelling fans was broken into on Monday night.

The club have also offered to pay for the cleaning of the coach after vandals defecated inside it while the clubs played out a Setanta Cup game at the Showgrounds.

“Sligo Rovers can confirm that the club and the Gardai are investigating reports from Glentoran supporters following last night’s match in The Showgrounds,” a club statement reads.

“Sligo Rovers are appalled and disgusted by the alleged incidents and we wish to offer our deepest apologies to Glentoran Football Club and their supporters. The occasion, being enjoyed by both sets of fans, was ruined by the action of a very small minority that clearly have no respect for visitors to Sligo or the football clubs.

“We pride ourselves on welcoming all clubs to Sligo and believe the matter last night is not the actions of those associated with Sligo Rovers. However, we take responsibility as it occurred in our ground and it is extremely disappointing to us.

“We are currently investigating the matter with the match night’s stewards and security to develop a full report on what happened and we await the result of the Gardai investigation.” You can read the full statement here.

Sligo Borough Council also condemned the vandalism at the Showgrounds and urged anyone with information to report it to the Gardai.

The Bit O’ Red beat their visitors 2-0 in the quarter-final tie, meanwhile.

As a Sligo Rovers fan I’d be ashamed if it was any of our fans. I prefer to think it was local yobs who have no connection to the club. The Glentoran fans were vocal throughout the match and are a credit to their club.

As a Rovers fan I’d be mortified if it was one of our supporters. I just hope it was local scumbags instead. Regardless of who did it, it was a disgusting attack on the Glentoran fans who were a credit to their club the other night.

Scum of the earth. It may have been sectarian, however I doubt that was the primary motive. I’ve witnessed visiting supporters from any and all League of Ireland clubs being set upon and assaulted by local thugs (not attending the game) who hang around outside the ground looking to attack any poor unfortunate in away colours. Let’s hope this is an isolated event and Northern and Southern football fans continue to enjoy the Setanta Cup.

My understanding is that you pass judgement on people and a situation that you know nothing about only what you heard or read in the paper , you said that someone from sligo had done this not having any evidence to prove otherwise, you have no facts or any correct information on this yet you criticize Irish people, as I said you have shown yourself for what you are in every way and your association with soon to be closed Rangers F.C only hardens the case that you indeed are a bigot and your comments show definite proof of this , also there is nowhere on the net where the term nordie is classed as derogatory , so more lies again what would you expect from a person who shows ignorance is bliss, you are what you are
