Sligo GAA change county final date to avoid FAI Cup semi-final clash

The decision has been taken to switch the senior county decider to October 13th.

SLIGO GAA CHIEFS have taken the noteworthy decision to change the date of their county senior football final to avoid a clash with Sligo Rovers FAI Ford Cup semi-final clash.

The meeting of Tubbercurry and Tourlestrane in the Sligo senior decider had been pencilled in for Sunday October 6th but it has now been switched to Sunday October 13th.

That is due to the fact that Sligo Rovers play Shamrock Rovers in the Showgrounds at 3.55pm on Sunday October 6th.

There is just over 2km seperating the two sports grounds in Sligo Town and a clash has now been avoided after the decision that was taken last night.

Pat McGrath, the chairman of the Sligo CCC, explained in an official statement the reasoning behind the deicison:

“Sport will be the winner from this rearrangement. The County Final and FAI Cup semi-final are the two biggest sporting occasions in Sligo this year, and it made no sense to have them clashing on the same day.

“There are many people who wish to attend both games, and I know many people from Sligo and particularly South Sligo who would like to attend the game in the Showgrounds to support Sligo Rovers and Rafael Cretaro.

“With the re-fixture of the County Final to 13th October, they will now be able to go to both games. For sports fans in County Sligo, these are games to savor and remember, We can now look forward to wonderful sporting occasions, and I fully believe that both fixtures will live up to expectations.

“I would like to thank the many people who accommodated the C.C.C. in making this decision; the local sporting public owes them a debt of gratitude.

“Sligo County Board wishes Sligo Rovers the best of luck in the FAI Ford Cup Semi Final and hopes to see them reach the Final in the Aviva once again.”

Fair play to both sides. Sligo rovers is such a healthy club, wish all LOI clubs had similar support!

They don’t but they were right to do so this time as the co final had more flexibly to be moved.

Am glad there is no clash! But why do GAA always have to change?
