5-star Sligo beat UCD to keep up pressure at top

It was looking good for the Students after David McMillan gave them the lead on 2 minutes.

GOALS FROM DAVID Cawley, Aaron Greene, Kieran Djilali, Joseph Ndo and an own goal by Liam Traynor helped Sligo Rovers overcome UCD 5-2 at the Showgrounds this evening.

Dean Clarke and David McMillan scored for the visitors, though their efforts ultimately turned out to a mere consolation.

It was looking good for the Students after McMillan gave them the lead on 2 minutes, as sloppy play in the Sligo backline allowed him to capitalise and produce a clever finish.

Cawley then levelled the game after 27 minutes, striking home powerfully following Greene’s lay off.

The score stayed at 1-1 until just after half-time, when Greene produced a superb strike from just outside the box.

It looked all over, after Traynor diverted Cawley’s cross into his own net, and Djilali’s composed finish effectively ended the game as a contest on 59 minutes.

There was still time, however, for Clarke to reduce the deficit to two goals, before Ndo converted Alan Keane’s cross to ensure an emphatic victory for his side.

The result means Sligo go up a place in the table to third, four points behind leaders St Patrick’s Athletic.

Meanwhile, elsewhere tonight, Waterford United beat Cobh Ramblers 2-0 in the First Division, thanks to two Ben Ryan penalties
