THERE MAY HAVE been a few bleary-eyed travellers looking at the diminutive man in the grey suit this morning and wondering “is that; no, it couldn’t be.”
It really was President Michael D. Higgins though as he joined hundreds of other travellers on an early morning flight to Poland to cheer on the boys in green.
Upon landing, President Higgins wasted no time in posing with Irish fans ahead of tonight’s big game.

Come on you boys in green. Great to see our president over there to cheer them on. C’mon Ireland.
Just 30 yrs ago there would have been uproar for him going to this match ahead of the opening of the Eucharist Congress.

We are so lucky the man won the election. There isn’t a whif of sulphur about this man. Nobody has anything on Michael D.
Moaners. I don’t get it.
Maybe he just wanted to go to the match and support the lads, just like the thousands of other fans who went to Poland. And maybe, just maybe, he took a few days off and paid for it out of his own pocket, again just like the thousands of other fans.
We’re such a nation of begrudgers and moaners, if these comments sections are anything to go by; no matter what anyone does we have to bring politics and vitriol into it. Grow up and stop being so destructive.
Did he ever kick a football in anger in his life I wonder? he should have been in Cork at the Munster Championship match this afternoon if he was a true gael.
I was wondering when the whinging would start. It’s an international match, he’s out there to show the country’s support as president of the country. It’s only right and proper that he’s there. Of course, some people have never been happy about anything at any moment in their lives – I suspect you are one of those people. So have a whinge about it, if it makes you feel better – but the rest of us, including the president, are too busy supporting our sportsman
