Sky Sports set to broadcast GAA championship games this summer as TV deal announced

The GAA have announced the new package to cover the period 2014-2017.

SKY SPORTS WILL broadcast 14 exclusive GAA championship games this summer as part of the new TV rights deal.

Within Ireland, a total of 45 provincial and All-Ireland championship matches will be broadcast live on television annually for the next three years: a total of 31 games will be shown by RTÉ (as per the last contract) and 14 by Sky Sports.

Sky Sports games consist of eight Saturday evening matches in the All-Ireland qualifiers, two All-Ireland football championship quarter-finals, and two Saturday evening and two Sunday provincial championship games.

Their first game will be the meeting of Kilkenny and Offaly in the Leinster SHC on June 7th followed by the clash of Dublin and Wexford in the Leinster SHC on June 14th.

Their other live provincial games will be Sligo against Galway or London in the Connacht SFC on June 21st and the Ulster semi-final between Armagh/Cavan against Down/Tyrone/Monaghan on June 28th. There will also be a midweek highlights show.

In addition to these 14 games, Sky Sports will also broadcast live the All-Ireland hurling and football semi-finals and finals, thus making 20 live games available to its subscribers throughout Britain and Ireland. All games broadcast on Sky and the majority on RTÉ will be shown in HD.

The 31 championship games to be televised by RTÉ include the All-Ireland finals and semi-finals in both codes, the All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals, and two of the four All-Ireland football quarter-finals.

RTÉ have also secured the rights to all six Provincial championship finals, while the remainder of the 31 games to be shown live on RTÉ are a mixture of provincial championship and qualifier games. Ulster championship games covered by RTÉ, including the provincial football final, will also be broadcast on BBC Northern Ireland.

The GAA has also delivered on its promise to address access to its major games for those living outside of Ireland. In addition to Sky Sports providing exclusive live coverage of 20 championship matches in Britain, in a major new departure, Channel 7 will show all 45 live championship games free to air in Australia.

In addition a new online streaming service – a joint venture between the GAA and RTÉ Digital – will allow supporters living in the US gain worldwide access to all games televised live in Ireland via the internet on PC, desktops, laptops, tablets, smart phones and other connected devices. Games will be streamed in high quality HD and subscribers to this service will also be able to view The Sunday Game.

TG4’s will  retain coverage of Sunday afternoon Allianz League matches. TG4 has also been awarded coverage of the All-Ireland minor finals, AIB club championships, Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cups, the All-Ireland Post-Primary championships, the Cadbury U21FC, Bord Gáis Energy U21 HC and county finals. It is anticipated that TG4 will again cover 62 live and 22 deferred games in each of the three years. Setanta Sports will continue to broadcast Saturday evening Allianz league games.

Radio coverage of GAA games remains with RTÉ and Newstalk, while Raidió na Gaeltachta will continue to broadcast both league and championship games trí Gaeilge. Today FM continue to provide score flash updates. In addition, the GAA intends to renew its successful local radio partnership with the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) in the coming weeks.

I got rid of my Sky Sports last month, I can still watch every match in any sport from around the world online. All I’m missing out on is being able to record them.

Sky Sports is pricey but with high speed internet it’s not necessary.

In my area there are also these buildings which are open to the public, provide food and drink and show virtually all sporting events. We call them pubs, they’re great spots in which to watch matches with some company.

    SKY is UK/Ireland only.

Have you ever watched a GAA match with someone who isn’t familiar with the game and the nationalism/tribalism/all grounds named after Catholic clergy or Nationalist heroes that goes with it?

Not even a UK/IRL audience. From what I’ve heard it will be subject to regionalism. I.e. Only those on the island of Ireland will be able to watch them, similar to how the BBC broadcasts coverage of games exclusively to NIRL and the ROI. People in London, Glasgow or Cardiff will still have regular SkySports without the GAA. No new viewers I’m afraid.

What I don’t get about this is on the pro side people are saying that this will promote our games to a wider audience, but most of the games sold are generally poor games, with poor attendances and poor resulting atmosphere, if they were trying to sell the sport to a wider audience it would be the finals and semi’s they should be showing (obviously I don’t want those to be sold), so therefore the people most affected are the actual fans of a particular county who are playing on the day, people like the elderly, people who don’t or can’t drink, and rural people, the supposed backbone of the organisation

Jesus the hysteria is laughable. Sky are getting less than ONE THIRD of all CHAMPIONSHIP games on TV, basically the same as what TV3 had. They have no semis or finals and only two football quarter finals. The rest is dreck that no one would really be too bothered with. Watching KK slaughter Offaly in the hurling? No thanks.

And then the lunatics who think Sky shelled out millions and the players will just have to be paid.

And the fools who forget that TG 4 have games on virtually every weekend all year round. League games, Third Level, Ladies Football, Second Level finals, and the Club Championships. But all people can focus on are a miserable 14 games.

And the eejits who think Sky won’t broadcast to other areas. They have four channels to fill in the summer and no World Cup or Ashes or Rugby to show.

And the muppets who think that the G.A.A. can run on fresh air. Over 80% of ALL GAA revenue goes directly to the clubs and schools promoting the games. The GAA would be fools to minimise rather than maximise their income.
The response of most on here is typical of this site. People who either have no idea what they are talking about and/or those who want everything for nothing and throw the toys out of the pram when even a little of it is taken away from them.

And if ye were fans at all you’d be at the bloody games!!

Whatever about TV3′s coverage the fact is it was free, I could chill out in my house last August watching the big quarter final between Mayo and Donegal at no extra expense. Setanta comes with the basic upc package, however you have to pay extra for sky sports even with the basic sky package, making it very expensive. Also a precedent has been set, sky can now go and try and outbid rte in the future. That’s their modus operandi, aggressive competition. While tv3′s coverage wasn’t great, it takes a number of years to build up the experience and confidence to do these programs. Look at how crap rte were 15 years ago.

As an example look at tv3′s breakfast show, because they’ve been broadcasting now for years (it was embarrassingly bad at the start) it is a much slicker show than the new rte morning show are peddling now themselves

    I feel a little hollow over this….

It’s not that sky are profit driven, it’s not that they are English, it’s not that you have to pay to view their channels, it’s not because of their historic editorial bias against the ethno-Irish community in the 6 counties, it’s not that they represent globalisation in media, it’s not even because of the Murdoch family…

…It’s because they are all these things at once… it’s because I thought that the GAA ethos was the antithesis of what they represent.

It won’t kill the games, it’ll increase funds to disperse to grassroots no doubt and probably increase popularity due to larger audience internationally all wraped up in the glitz, gimmicks and stats… Still I’m allowed feel a little hollow and empty… aren’t I?

it’s a shame that the GAA, supposedly an amateur organisation have sold out.
It makes it much much harder for people to view these matches now. I have played and supported GAA, both hurling and football, all my life, and my kids do too. I can’t afford a Sky Sports subscription and I’m not bringing my children, who are under 8, into a pub to watch a match. Do you think the GAA care? Obviously not if they went ahead with this. It’s the tip of the iceberg. After this contract ends, Sky will buy up more matches.
I’m not surprised actually, as money has been a major focus of the GAA in recent years. Shame really

Is it really that big an issue that your kids won’t have access to live coverage of 14 out of 45 GAA championship matches. First world problems. At least they’ll watch every second of the other 31 though, right? If its not your county team playing I doubt they’ll be that bothered. If it is, why not bring them to the game. I remember feck all of the games that I saw on telly when I was a kid, but I remember nearly every bit of every championship game my dad brought me to.

i read the article. it’s very clear. Sky Sports will be showing 14 matches that RTE nor any other terrestrial channels will be showing. That’s as clear as day. TV3, which was free to view, previously had these matches.

Also theres a good chance that in 3 years time when $$$ signs come around again, Sky will take more than the 14 matches, meaning less matches to watch without paying.

I have absolutely no problem with a commercial organisation such as the Premier League or Heineken Cup etc going to Sky. Thats the nature of business. The GAA however is an amateur organisation where the players don’t get paid. As someone mentioned earlier some of these players will have to pay to watch themselves!

When Sky end up showing 90% of the matches in 10 years time and you’re still happy with that then so be it! I’m entitled to my opinion and i’m not alone

I’m not entirely sure why people are supportive of paying for something that was previously free. Bit baffling really. Do you support the introduction of the water tax? (previously free), the property tax? (previously free) etc etc. Not exactly like for like but as stated many times, the GAA are an amateur organisation. From their Official guide:

I live in the UK and pay for premier sports to watch the games. I’d gladly pay rte or the gaa to watch all games but accept that I have to pay to view over here. Looking at http://www.premiersports.tv/gaa/gaa/ announcement it looks like they are still going to get the rights in the uk so in terms of the sky deal it looks to be all about the money. Reading the rte still have 31 games comments above seems to miss the point that the other 14 games are no longer available on a free to air channel. You now have to pay to watch our national amateur game in Ireland. The argument that they are not the quality games only stands until your county is playing in them and you have to either pay or go to the pub to watch a game. starts us on a slippery slope but then again when you’re in Croker and car add flashes on the big screen before you can see the replay, the game has been going this way for some time. I hope congress and the ordinary members kick up and say enough is enough. It’s not soccer, it’s not professional it’s for the ordinary people played by your neighbours, sons and daughter who give up their lives for the love of the game and to bring pride to their county. Sky have no business in that. It’s a bit of a disgrace in my eyes.

Why Alan, sure lar Corbett hung around for a year on the dole and he was supposed to be one of the games stars! How many former players are now struggling with legacy injuries with nothing to show for it, unemployed, bankrupt etc. And now they’re selling the games to a pay per view channel!

I’m not sure you understand the first thing about the GAA. Medals are what lads have to show for it. Not money.

But sure it would only cost about 60 million to run 64 county panels of 30 players each on the average industrial wage. I’m sure SKY will cough that up every year no problem. And as for the 3,500 clubs in the country? They’ll just have to fend for themselves.

Anyone who thinks the GAA owes Lar Corbett or any other player a job is not playing with a full deck.

Alan, I didn’t personalise my comments so please don’t so yourself, I’m sorry but the gaa can’t have it both ways. I don’t expect sky to pay enough to pay wages to players, but the gaa charge into all their senior games, they charge rte and tv3 to show games etc. I’ve played gaa all my life, but I haven’t played inter county where you’re expected to train up to 4 times a week, travel big distances, miss work days, get career threatening injuries and then have to collect the dole while people are charged 30 euros into watching me lay my body on the line. Did you not read of a former player who had to recently sell his all Ireland medal to pay for his medical expenses.

    they play for free

they play for a chance to suck up to ex players /managers

they are dumb and they deserve to be stepped on

Do the players get paid? Or is it even more money for the big boys at the GAA.

the players are as dumb as you can get

that’s not very nice but it is the truth

    in every village in Ireland
young lads and ladies play the game (for free)
while ex players and ex managers coach
and get well paid for it
not to forget local businessmen ”support” the GAA

a man i know eats dinner in the Arms hotel listowel co kerry and the GAA pay for it

if this is not a day that’s in it joke. Then
what a turn up. Money Money Money its all about the Money.
Getting the game world wide my hole. But that’s RTE for you
They are still behind the times they should have been showing the games live on the big wide world of the Webb thingy .
But once again they fall short.
the GAA will smell the cash and give over more games to SKY every year it will become pay for view. 100%

    Sadly not.

RTE cover a disproportionate amount of Ulster football.
Reason being, is that the games are already filmed by BBC-NI, so the costs are minimal compared to sending a crew to cover say, Wicklow vs Kildare.

More hysteria now than when croker was opened. There was plenty of doomsday merchants then and look how well that panned out.

I would worry that sky will give this a few years but then feck off. All will depend on international viewing figures.

I would also like to see the players get some benefit from this. Should the gaa continue to receive grant aid?? Will this be the only sport on sky where the players get no financial reward???

Regards the GAA, fair play to them, at least I can see where the money goes ( you just have to look at clubs and stadiums up and down the country ) beats having to get kitted out in ur car or the bushes in the middle of the park ( FAI )

Great news for expats in Oz having coverage on Channel 7. I wonder will it be the main channel 7 or a digital offshoot channel. I guess it will just be a direct feed. So many expats have travelled to bars at the early hours of the morning to cheer on teams. Now they can watch it from their sitting room at 11pm on a Sunday night.
I see Sky will also have access to semis and finals along with Rte. It is bound to take ad revenue from Rte as people with Sky packages will switch. Interesting times.
