SIGH. WHEN WILL people learn that football songs rarely, if ever, are a good idea?
And despite Ireland not even qualifying for Euro 2012 yet, The Corrigans have already got the bandwagon rolling with the oddly titled ‘Jovanni’.
The lyrics include the rather contentious lines: “You must never think twice / About the way Jo-vanni play / Just believe we’re goin all the way,” as well as asserting, somewhat presumptuously, that “we’re going to Poland and Ukraine”.
The song is a loose cover of George Michael’s ‘Faith,’ and also contains sophisticated nods (for a football song at least) to Ireland’s ‘4-2-4’ formation, and to Giles and Dunphy having “their say,” in addition to referencing media tycoon Denis O’Brien (Jovanni ‘loves’ him apparently).
Of course, this is not the first time that there has been an Irish football song released to celebrate our (near) qualification for a major tournament. Remember this? Or indeed this?
While The Corrigans’ effort is the first, it is unlikely to be the last, unfortunately.
So for now, let’s just hope Robbie Keane sticks to the day job.
