SLIGO ROVERS HAVE received a massive boost with news that Danny North has signed a new contract.
The English striker has been in superb form since joining the Bit O’Red from St Patrick’s Athletic before the start of this season – scoring 17 goals in 20 appearances for the club.
Despite being without their top marksman on Friday night due to suspension, Ian Baraclough’s came away from the Brandywell with a 2-1 win over Derry City, meaning they hold a six-point lead over second-placed Drogheda United at the top of the Premier Division.
North’s goalscoring exploits have brought interest from a number of English and Scottish clubs and, while he maitained that the long term plan is to return to England, he told TheScore on Friday that he is committed to winning the league with Sligo this season.
And the 24-year-old has put pen to paper in a deal that will bring him up to the end of the 2013 campaign, the club confirmed today.
I’m delighted to get my future sorted for another year,” North told SligoRovers.com. “I could never dreamed it going so well to be honest with you. I’m always looking to be amongst the goals but to get so many early on, you’ve got to be happy with that.
“I’m going to try to improve and do that every day in training and on the pitch. It is nice to be knowing where my future lies, there is that little less pressure.
“The club came to me and wanted to tie me down and the deal was right so I signed it. I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think it was right for me. Things have got better and better and hopefully they can keep going.”
Sligo travel to Slovakia for Thursday’s Europa League second round qualifier with Spartak Trnava and, although he is looking forward to it, North believes winning their first domestic title since 1977 is the main priority.
“It is good to play in Europe but obviously the main thing is the league,” he said. “We‘re looking forward to it. You go to places you’ve never been before and it is an experience. You’ve got to enjoy it.”
