Ciarán Sheehan's mother booked a ticket to Melbourne when he got debut nod for Saturday

The former Cork footballer will chest the Carlton banner for the first time this weekend.

WHEN CIARÁN SHEEHAN at last takes to the oval in Melbourne this weekend for his senior AFL debut, his biggest fan will be present.

The former Cork footballer will line out for Carlton on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium against the Gold Coast.

And his mother Liz headed straight for the airport when she heard the news.

“I called my Mum and she was a bit shocked too, but very excited as well,” Sheehan told the club’s official website. “I think she was just delighted for me personally and she can’t wait to get over and get a look at the game. It’s exciting times.”

The 23-year-old has made impressive progress in his Australian Rules career since moving Down Under last January.

And ahead of his senior bow, the Éire Óg clubman says the Blues’ coaches have helped him develop a real understanding of his adopted game.

“Luke Webster, Mathew Capuano and Michael Osborne have been really helpful toward helping me understand the structures. They’ve done everything in their power to try to get me a game as well so I owe a lot to them, and all the players as well, especially all the first year players who have been training really hard.”

As for where he’ll line up on Saturday morning?

“I’m not to fussed,” he insists. “I will go wherever I am put so long as I am playing games! It’s just a great opportunity to see where I’m at, so I will go out and do my best and see what happens.”
