MATCH OF THE DAY pundit Alan Shearer expects Manchester City to dominate the Premier League following their historic title win on Sunday.
City stunned bitter rivals United with two late goals against QPR to clinch their first title in 44 years and with the financial backing the Sky Blues have, Shearer anticipated another off-season of big spending.
“I think they (Manchester City) will spend again in the summer,” Shearer said at the Premier League 20 season awards last night.
“They can outbid anyone, they can pay bigger wages than anyone and when that happens, inevitably you’re going to get the best players, so yes I can see them ruling for quite some time.”
Shearer lamented Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the Champions League after a sensational season and said they may not be able to sustain the type of success they have achieved.
“I don’t know (if Newcastle United can sustain their form). They’ve had a magnificent season, it’s a shame they just missed out on that fourth spot,” he said.
“Even so I congratulate (manager) Alan (Pardew) and all his players but the hard work for Newcastle really starts now because when you finish in that position everyone wants you to improve and get better. Hopefully the can, whether or not remains to be seen.”
