Shay Given: still okay for the Euros, we're told.

Shay Given to go to London to see knee specialist

“This is purely precautionary and Shay remains fine for the Euros,” the FAI insist.

IRELAND’S INJURY WORRIES, ahead of next month’s European Championships, deepened today.

The FAI have confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Shay Given will travel to London tomorrow morning to consult a knee specialist.

The Aston Villa shot-stopper sat out training for the past couple of days but the association insist the decision to head to England is precautionary.

“Shay Given will travel to London tomorrow to visit a knee specialist that he has seen in the past. He will return to Portmarnock in the evening,” a spokesperson said.

“This is purely precautionary and Shay remains fine for the Euros.”

The news on given comes as Paul McShane prepares to join the squad as cover. Ireland play Bosnia in their final home friendly at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Even on one leg he’s still the best goalkeeper around and one of the main reasons we’re heading to the Euro’s.

Actually he’s made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes in this campaign. He’s still a top keeper but is not as keen to come for crosses as I’d like. I’d be alot more worried if one of our central defenders got injured.

True. He’s far far better than our reserve keepers though.
I’d say his demotion with city wasn’t good for his confidence and villa are so so poor.
He’s still definitely one of the best on his day though.

Fair point – cover at the back has been an issue for a very long time.

Funny you say that as I think Villa conceded the most goals from corners in this year’s premiership. He is not the tallest of keepers. Trap being the shrewd man has big players at the back to compensate.
A great keeper. He would probably get more recognition if he had moved to a top Spanish team when he left Newcastle or before it.

Memories of Paris come flooding back when you think of Mr McShane. He’s hardly improved in the mean time?

Shay is one of the best keepers in Europe if not the world. An absolute gent to meet as well.

As for McShane? He’s a nice enough lad but he’s not a reliable player. Paris 2009 sure enough is the first thing that comes to mind about him.

@hurler 2012 r u suggesting that the Irish players going to the euros couldn’t care less. If you are get a grip. Anyone that pulls on a jersey be it club, county or international should have pride in it. Just because we play a results based style of football doesn’t mean the players don’t care.

They do not represent Ireland, in fact the majority of them are not even Irish.
However I suppose professional footballers will do anything for money.

I wish Shay Given well. However the Irish soccer team play the most negative style of football. They are effectively a bunch of “B” players who will struggle to score a goal in the tournament. GAA players have pride in their jerseys, loyalty to their team and provide top class entertainment while not getting paid. The majority of the Irish soccer team would jump ship for a better offer.

You don’t get paid for playing for your country you fool! Your contracts to your your club and you can decide whether or not to represent for nothing, not a penny. As for this jumping ship tripe, you cant jump ship once you play for your countries senior team. Do us a favour and save your barstooling for the boozer!

Soccer is a game played by mercenaries. Fools support the Irish team who if they cared about their supporters would play entertaining football and not the rubbish they serve up. I know the truth hurts.

True it will be a huge task with or without a fully fit team, but we’ve done well to qualify as one of the top 16 in Europe. Especially when you consider Spain, Italy, Portugal, England, Germany, Russia, France and Holland always qualify and Poland and Ukraine were straight through, that only leaves room for 5 more teams.
