Sharp shooter: remembering the day Kim Jong Il shot 38-under par

As North Koreans mourn the death of “Dear Leader”, we take a look back at his most famous sporting feat. This definitely happened.

OPEN THE GUINNESS Book of Records and it will tell you that Ryo Ishikawa’s 58 in May of last year at The Crowns in Japan is the lowest official total for a single round of golf.

Of course, had the mandatory Guinness observer been present when Kim Jong Il played a round at Pyongyang Golf Course in North Korea in 1994, the record books might tell a different story.

Unsurprisingly, the details of Kim’s ceremonial round at North Korea’s first golf course are sketchy; even the exact date is open to question.

What isn’t in doubt however is that Korea’s “Dear Leader”, then a sprightly 52-year-old who had recently succeeded his father Kim Il Sung as the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic, put in quite the performance.

Accompanied by 17 armed bodyguards and Pyongyang’s course professional, Kim managed to complete the 7,700-yard course in a remarkable 34 shots, shooting no worse than a birdie on any hole and scoring five holes-in-one to boot.

How do we know of this miraculous occurrence? Well, it was widely reported at the time by North Korea’s government-controlled media.

And, if that’s not enough proof for the doubters among you, Park Young Man, the professional who had accompanied Kim on his record-breaking jaunt, confirmed it to the International Herald Tribune a couple of months later.

Describing Kim as “an excellent golfer,” Park hardly needed to think before assuring journalist Eric Ellis that “Dear Leader” had scored a two on the 370-yard dog-leg that is Pyongyang’s first hole.

Fortunately for the professional reputation of lesser luminaries such as Tiger Woods, Kim was too busy to keep up the hobby, packing in his budding golf career after just one round to concentrate on the well-being of his people.

  • I also remember another famous record. A book was wrote about a guy who walked on water turned water into wine and came back from rigour mortise after 3 days and although he is 2011 years old is watching you guys now. I bet all you smug evangelicals are laughing at aul Kims miraculous claims but can you prove he didnt do as it said on State TV? Where is your faith now? Yes being an atheist I think it is a tad mental but then again so are your delusional beliefs.

    • Paul, the record will never be scratched. your optimism that human primates can take on board that we can be manipulated to believe absolutely anything is not deserved. Our friend Kim here if his life was to serve any useful function whatsoever is that we are not fully rational beings and it is to our detriment.

I never said that we were beyond manipulation, just that your constantly bringing every topic back to atheism is boring.

    • I guess that depends on ones perspective but it is highly appropriate that our propensity to be manipulated be mentioned when a subject like Kim Jong il discussed. Likewise I consider any other topic where I bring atheism, reason and scepticism up is highly relevant. But I cant please everyone. If I were to comment on all the posts that were boring or not to my taste on this site I would be here all night. Each and everyone to their polemic. I didnt force you to read it.

I get the link, celestial dictator and all that…and I don’t normally comment at all but hey…it seemed like a frivolous article calling for light hearted smart ass replies rather than the same old same old

    • Paul there are two valid ways of looking at it. Yes it is a batshit crazy regieme that we can poke fun at until the cows come home but not to mention the serious side of peoples minds being broken down by mental manipulation and the fact that similar processes have taken place in Ireland albeit on a lesser scale. The fact that many and I appreciate it may not be your objection but it is often considered taboo or offensive to criticise religion in a way that it is not with any other topic. The parallels with political despotism are uncanny and disturbing. You dont need a military to silence argument if you can convince people that they should be hurt and offended when religious ideas are challenged. This is every bit as powerful as censoring media or powerful militias etc. Social taboo is yet another tool in the kit of mind control. Thankfully the internet is breaking it down and here it is generally not a concern. So as someone who appreciates scepticism it is hardly surprising that I and many will promote critical thought on here and other sites. This is precisely one of the reasons that I for one comment on these examples when I see them. Some people have their own pet subjects or personal causes and secularising society is one very close to my heart as no doubt you probably have recognised.
