IRELAND OUT-HALF Jonathan Sexton has been nominated for the IRB’s World Player of the Year award.
The Racing Metro man played a key role in Ireland’s Six Nations victory, not least in the decisive win away to France.
Sexton is the oldest of the five nominees and the only from outside the world’s top two ranked nations.
The 29-year-old faces competition from New Zealand’s Julian Savea (wing) and Brodie Retallick (lock) as well as the Springbok duo of Willie le Roux (fullback) and Duane Vermeuelen (number 8).

I think it was acknowledged at the time that there were flaws in the voting process, he lost it by one point / vote, whatever way it works, but without question was the best player in the world in 2009 and it’s a travesty that he never won it. To make it even more ironic, was that McCaw won it in 2009, after having one of his most average seasons of his entire career (which was still a great season, just not at the level near where he would normally be or where O’Driscoll was).
Theres been a few who should never have won who should have. The best player sometimes doesn’t win it. The year Mccaw won ahead of Bod was a travesty (munster fan) by the way.
Same number of six nations championships, more Heineken cups, a lions series victory and now a player of the year nomination. In my opinion sexton has already achieved more in his career than O’Gara.
I know his form since the new season started hasn’t been great but mike brown must have been close to a nomination. His brilliant six nations and even his autumn series last year would have pushed him near.
Hooper and folua can feel hard done by. Sexton has been consistently the best nh player at international level over the last year and they would hav to pick a player from the 6 nations champs

BOD never won it which is pretty harsh

2009, BOD captained and won us the Grand Slam and also won the Heineken cup, he was the best player in the world that year and was indeed robbed..
