Sexton will enjoy building a new success in Paris, says Horgan

The former team-mate of Ireland’s number 10 admitted that he too would have been tempted by the move.

FORMER LEINSTER AND Ireland wing Shane Horgan admits that he too was tempted by a move away from Ireland during his career, but the lack of silverware at Leinster drove him on.

Horgan scored 69 tries in over 200 appearances for Ireland’s eastern province, and the entirety of his 14 years in the game were as a Leinster player.

Even so, Horgan can fully empathise with his former team-mate Jonathan Sexton’s decision to take his skill-set to the Top 14.

“I was (one club man), but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t tempted to go or at certain times in my career thought it would have been a nice thing to do. I certainly was, and did.” The RTE pundit told TheScore.ie today.

After some initial confusion raised by Racing Metro president Jacky Lorenzetti’s protestations that Sexton would not be joining his club, an accepted consensus has returned that the Paris club will indeed have Ireland’s number 10 in their ranks next season.

Life-changing

Horgan believes that the chance for Sexton to sample a new city, new surrounds with a new big challenge is one that the St Mary’s man will relish.

“That was one of the issues that I found with leaving; I wanted to achieve something with Leinster.” Horgan added. “We had a lot of years when there was nothing being achieved so that was certainly an issue for me. But he doesn’t have that, he’s achieved more than anyone could have believed with Leinster.

“That was maybe one of the factors – he was probably looking for another challenge, coupled with a life-changing sum of money.

“But knowing Jonny the way I do, the idea of a challenge and being able to build something with Racing and living a life in Paris. I think they’re really strong draws, certainly ones that any thinking person would think were significant.”

Shane Horgan will be part of the team as RTÉ Sport broadcast comprehensive coverage of this year’s RBS 6 Nations with all 15 RBS 6 Nations matches available in HD.

If a company offered me the chance to double my salary in a job that will only last me another 6-7 years…. What would I do… Hmm…. Oh yeah I’d take it…

He’s the hottest property in northern hemisphere rugby is the reason he’s catching the headlines.

    • Getting a bit carried away here. He was an important cog in a great team but he wasnt the only star. IMO the likes of BOD, Kearney, Nacewa and SOB on form struck more fear in the heart of the opposition than Sexton

  • Even when Munster qualify for closing stages of the henicken cup , they still go on about Leinster , bit of an inferiority complex I think !! Sexton is a huge loss to IRISH rugby.

  • He’s going for the money, simple as, not to “sample a new city” sure he can go to Paris any time, it’s only a 2 hr flight away!

Sexton this – Sexton that – are there no other rugby players in Ireland ? Jaysus get over it – he’s gone, adieu, adios !

    • He’s arguably the most important player to the best team in Europe over the last 5 years, and the best player Ireland currently have.

This isn’t Peter Odemwingie to QPR, this is Cristiano Ronaldo to PSG. It’s a huge move in the rugby world.

    • @ Elrat,
I completely agree with you, talk about news over-kill on an out-half, who has left a side competing in the Amlin Cup.
Richard get your head out of your arse, Leinster are like a ship sinking fast! Your analogy is as stupid as your comment!

    • Nonsense. BOD, Elsom, Thorn, Ross and Nacewa were/ are IMO more of a key to Leinster’s success over the past 4 years than Sexton. A solid quality player yes but so are Rob Kearney, Heaslip, Healy and O Brien

    • I love how Munster fans claim Leinster won the Heineken cup twice because of a secondrow, two different ones at that.
Why I find this funny is that if a secondrow can win the Heineken cup all by himself how come Munster with Paul O’Connell haven’t won the cup for the past 13 years?

    • Sorry Tony,
I am giving a balanced, honest view which seems to irate people like you! You spend your time trolling on Munster articles with utter B.S.
You follow a team in decline, get over it, move on, get realistic and write something that can be backed up with FACTS not past Fairytale stories.
Your comment on this article was directed at me, I am flattered but I have a girlfriend. I suggest you and your boyfriend watch re-runs of Leinster’s Heineken Cup wins, while discussing this season, losing the group by a record margin, and what happens when ye get knocked out of the Amlin Cup!
Maybe you can meet up with Richard for a pint and discuss how great Leinster are, and bitch how could Kidney pick any players outside of the province.
To quote an equally delusional supporter in Richard- “He’s arguably the most important player to the best team in Europe over the last 5 years,” You are a CLOWN which is good for a laugh!

    • A team in decline? We have lost to only two team in Europe in the past 3 years.
We got knocked out of Europe by a very good French team.
Munster while in the last 8 lost 2 games but one to a very poor French team and an average english team in the past few months.
Unless Munster can upset the odds and win v quinns they will be out of Europe too, now added to the fact that Munster are not even in the top 4 in the rabbo, I’d not be too concerned about Leinster and start worrying about things closer to home.

    • Fair points there Chris, but to be totally honest of the two provinces, the out-look is much brighter for Munster. Anything Munster achieve now is a bonus for a team under transition. It is so easy fall off the pace in Europe and I think Leinster haven’t addressed some key problems. The fact they have lost there established out-half only compounds this. I am not going to list names of aging players or out-of-form players. I will say that a true supporter would acknowledge that unless they rectify key positions quickly the glory days are behind them. The HC is a very difficult competition to dominate for more than a few years, teams have to re-build and re-group. Toulouse buck the trend a little, but Munster, Leicester, Wasps are all testament to this. No side has a continuous supply of world beaters and all teams have had to start afresh, this is possibly the most difficult thing to do, the French are ruthless at it, though I know they have an embarrassment of riches.

    • It depends on how you look at it Leinster are strong in lots of areas
front row is a plus, 5 top class players
      Backrow the same
      Two good 9′s
      Back 3 is super
      Now the weak areas
Madigan has to step in a different type of player but so far so good. Kicking maybe a problem but McFadden and isa can kick so maybe not as big a problem
Centre: I’d expect this to be bod’s last season so to replace him is almost impossible, hopefully o’malley or McFadden can step in. I’d say going by current form darcy will get another season
The biggest problem this year has been the secondrow. But with McCarthy comming half of that will be solved, hopefully toner or roux will stand up, or my preference would be move big kev mc into the row.
Hopefully there will be a signing or two to add to the squad.
It could depend on the rabbo and Amlin pick up a title or two and confidence might flow and with a bit of luck avoid clermont next year and who knows.

  • Sexton is now in his prime, great chance for him and good luck to him
I think is great opportunity to add to his game.
I believe a lot of players would benefit from playing the game abroad for a while (bull Hayes was better for it)
In my humble opinion and it is humble I would take O Gara in his prime over sexton today, more confidence in o Gara delivering all say every day. That day alas is in the past, both Munster and Leinster need no 10′s quick. Big hopes for young JJ down in Munster.
Not sure who Leinster have coming behind Madigan – Munster look better placed with Keatly and Rog- I guess Leinster will acquire some talent.

  • Think after sextons big wage we are going to see a rush of good young players moving abroad maybe not a bad thing as they seem to improve their game on return to irish duties,a lot down to age, more experience etc.
keatly and fitzgerald and gilroy all contenders, but no one can blame them short life in rugby, plus next injury never far away.
