Senator who called for UFC to be banned in Ireland admits she 'jumped the gun'

Catherine Noone has done a U-turn on comments made in the media this morning.

FINE GAEL SENATOR Catherine Noone has backed down from her stance after suggesting that the UFC should be banned in Ireland.

Noone told The Herald that she had written to the Minister for Sport to seek his views on the biggest promotion in mixed martial arts before giving her thoughts on Tubridy on 2fm this morning.

“I do think this stuff is awful,” she said. “I don’t claim to know the world’s end about this stuff but I do know the basics.

“I don’t really think that it’s something we should be giving a platform to. It’s ultra-violent, it tends to be very, very staged and it’s all about the money.

I know most things are all about the money in the commercial world but I just think it’s hideous stuff and I don’t know why we should entertain it on our shores.”

Noone went on to admit that she had never watched a UFC fight before and revealed that her knowledge of the sport was based largely on an article written by close friend Colin Barry.

After a significant reaction to her comments on Twitter, however, Noone took to the social media site to accept that she had “jumped the gun” — adding that she would be open to accepting an invitation to train and educate herself about the sport.

Admits not knowing much about a subject, then talks at length about it anyway. The Seanad ladies and gentlemen……

She’s a joke, like so many of our politician’s just winging it as she goes along but I suppose bad publicity is better then no publicity I certainly never heard of her before now!

Fair play for holding her hands up and admitting she was wrong. Need more of that from politicians

Fair play my arse. She made an uninformed view thinking it would go down well, then when it goes down like a fart in a spacesuit she sprints in the opposite direction. What a soundbite queen with no actual substance.

The article above re. Leinster A and Connacht Eagles, shows Nathan Whites face bandaged up like a mummy with his nose in bits. I don’t hear her calling for rugby to be banned. The injuries in rugby are a lot worse. I have been following both sports for donkeys years and the injuries are definitely worse in rugby.
