Title: Scotland in December – Jean Van de Velde
Premise: French golfer Jean Van de Velde is best remembered for his collapse on the final hole at the 1999 Open Championship in Carnoustie, Scotland.
The Mont-de-Marsan native had played largely flawless golf over the preceding weekend to leave himself needing just a double bogey six on the last to claim a shock victory. Van de Velde shot a seven after finding water and knee-deep rough.
The Frenchman subsequently dropped into a three-way playoff with Justin Leonard and Paul Lawrie, which the latter won.
One commentator working at the event observed that he thought Van de Velde would have done better to have played the entire hole with his putter, so six months after the competition, that’s exactly what Van de Velde did.
