Two youngsters give us a reminder of true sportsmanship at schools GAA finals

Photographer Pairic English caught a brilliant moment at the Allianz Sciath na Scol Finals in Cork.

AS ANYONE WHO has ever played in one will tell you, schools GAA finals are a serious business.

But winning isn’t everything.

Photographer Pairic English caught this brilliant moment shared by two young opponents at the Allianz Sciath na Scol Finals in Cork.

In the heat of their final, played in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday, Riain Ó Cathail (black jersey) was quick to console Ciarán O’Connell.

The photo was taken just after Ó Cathail’s school, Gaelscol Mhainistir Na Corann in Midleton, scored a goal against Coachford NS.

O’Connell had plenty to smile about by the final whistle though as Coachford went on to win in extra-time.

Thanks to Allianz Sciath na Scol PRO Seamus O’Connor for the info.

I used to put my arm around opponents all the time and smile at them as I threatened them

The first thing ya did after going on was stamp on the instep of your opponent so he couldn’t walk Nd pretend it was an accident . Lots of accidents at every game …… That’s the old docents for ya if ya can’t beat em stamp on em .

Nice to see sportsmanship at such a young age, hopefully pushy parents won’t force them into winning is everything mentality, that’s the great thing about youth, there’s no race, creeds politics , just two innocent kids loving life, photo of the year in my opinion ,should be plastered over every sports club in the country

Lovely photo, great example of sportsmanship. I doubt either young fella will thank you for publishing that particular photo though. School can be a cruel minefield!

God only knows what he’s saying to him, “next time the ball comes down this end you better run the other way or else”
Just kidding, fair play to them, I admire any child who goes out and plays sport and can enjoy it without the win at all costs mentality that driven into them as they get older
