Scholes’ return shows United are weak, says Vieira

Manchester City official and former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira reckons the Old Trafford legend’s comeback says a lot.

FORMER ARSENAL GREAT Patrick Vieira believes the return of Paul Scholes proves there is weakness in the Manchester United squad.

Scholes announced his retirement from the game following United’s title-winning season last year. However, the former England man made a dramatic comeback earlier this year, and was named as a substitute for United’s 3-2 FA Cup win over City.

While Vieira, currently Football Development Executive at Manchester City, is full of praise for the midfield maestro, he believes Scholes’ return highlights a shallowness in the United squad.

“Paul Scholes is a player that I really love and admire, one of the best English players of the last few years, and seeing him come back is good for him and for United,” Vieira told reporters.

“But for him to come back just shows a little bit of weakness in United, because they had to bring a player back who was 37.”

The Frenchman added that it could be a tough few years for United following the sale of Ravel Morrison and potential departure of Paul Pogba.

“I think it shows that, in the next few years, it will be really difficult for United to cope with other teams because, with all the respect I have for Scholes, him coming back shows that they don’t have talent in there to replace him.

“When you see United losing young players like Ravel Morrison and maybe Paul Pogba, they should be really worried because that wouldn’t have happened in the past,” he added.

  • Perhaps Patrick is a little jealous of Paul Scholes longevity. Paul pogba is still a Manchester United player, united are top of the league, ahead of his current employer and Ravel Morrison, while he may be a talent for the future, his future prospects dont govern his current wages he will probably regret this move in the future. The chance to play for any of the top flight teams at his age would surely pay dividends in the future. A nonsensical comment from a player who has made no contribution apart from this comment in years.

  • So Pat, I wonder why your present employers bent over backwards to bring Tevez all the way back from his retreat in South America. It wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that citys weakness has seen them drop down the league as expected? Incidentally – what do you do at the replacement Maine Road?
