Phew! Schmidt says O'Driscoll injury 'not too serious'

The coach added that the Ireland captain wanted to play on, and said that taking him off was a precautionary measure.

LEINSTER COACH JOE Schmidt played down fears surrounding the fitness of Brian O’Driscoll, after the centre hobbled off during Leinster’s 59-22 defeat of Cardiff Blues this evening.

Speaking to RTE, he said that the Ireland captain had suffered a strained ankle and was “going to play on,” claiming the injury was “not too serious” and insisting that the decision to take him off was purely a precautionary measure.

With respect to the emphatic nature of Leinster’s win, he added: “I wouldn’t read as much into it as nine tries suggest,” explaining that both sides were still recovering from their respective Heineken Cup matches last week and therefore, not at full strength.

Meanwhile, Man of the Match Jordi Murphy was not getting too carried away with his performance, emphasising the “collective effort” involved in his side’s convincing win.

He continued: “It’s always great for the young lads like myself to get opportunities,” while singling out Kevin McLaughlin and Jamie Heaslip for praise.

“[They're] full of experience and always willing to help.”
