Safe bet: Tony McCoy set for Cheltenham

The champion jockey is confident he’ll be back in the saddle in time for the festival’s trial day.

RECOVERING FROM BROKEN ribs, Tony McCoy is planning on being fit in time for the Cheltenham Trials Day later this month.

McCoy sustained the injury at Taunton on 30 December after a nasty fall from Laudatory at the last. He wrote in his Telegraph column later that day: ”I have had a few injuries before, but this is not one I recommend – even the morphine was not doing what it was supposed to do.”

Yesterday, he told At The Races, “I was pretty sore for a week but I’ve improved over the last few days and I’m going to see a specialist in Bristol on Thursday.”

“I’m improving a lot all the time but there’s so much good racing coming up in the spring I want to make sure I’m 100 per cent right.”

“If I came back too early and had a bad fall again and was putting myself in doubt for the better meetings I’d be more disappointed in myself. For once I’m going to do the sensible thing. There’s good meetings at Cheltenham and Leopardstown at the end of the month and, all being well, I’ll be back for them, probably before.”

The Cheltenham Trials Day will run on 28 January, the festival itself kicks off on 13 March.
