Robin van Persie: 'I had to wait so long for my first title'

The Dutch striker hit a hat-trick, said he felt weird.

MANCHESTER UNITED’S TALISMANIC striker Robin van Persie has described securing the first league title of his career as a “weird” moment.

The Dutchman netted a hat-trick to help United cruise to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa tonight which secured the club’s 20th league success. And Van Persie has hailed the “great feeling” of lifting the third trophy of his career following UEFA Cup success with Feyenoord and an FA Cup win with Arsenal.

“I am very happy but it is weird,” he told Sky Sports. “I had to wait so long for my first title. It is a great feeling. It is a fantastic team and fantastic players.

“It is a championship for every single one of them. The staff, the managers, the physios. This is our 20th title, it is deserved. It [the second goal] was one the best goals. I only had to time it right. Let me enjoy this moment, next game is against Arsenal, but let me enjoy this moment.”

The 29-year-old struck his 22nd, 23rd and 24th league goals of the season as Villa were ruthlessly swept aside but was keen to praise the contribution of his team-mates.

“It doesn’t matter who scored the goals as long as we won the game,” he said. “From the first minute, everyone played well and it was great to score so early and a great win for us.”
