Caucau eager to 'do beautiful things' as Agen confirm Fijian's return

The 34-year-old wing is back in France for one final challenge.

RUPENI CAUCAUNIBUCA HAS returned to European rugby for one last challenge, eager to show that “a 34-year-old can do beautiful things.”

Pro D2 club Agen have officially confirmed the signing of the Fijian wing, who was unveiled at a press conference in the southwestern town yesterday afternoon.

‘Rups’ has put pen to paper on a one-year contract and now hopes to help the club’s attempts to gain promotion into the Top 14. Caucaunibuca previously spent six seasons with Agen, twice finishing top try scorer in the French top tier.

“I wanted to return to Agen in France because it’s my club, the club in my heart that I want to pull off one last challenge with,” said Caucau at the press conference.

I’m not afraid of competition. The team is playing very well and I want to show that a 34-year-old can still do beautiful things. I will try to add my experience.”

Caucaunibuca will have to compete with Kiwi Viliame Waqaseduadua, fellow Fijian Laitia Tagotago and Canadian international Taylor Paris for a place on the wing at Agen, but his return has caused excitement among the clubs’ fans.

The 34-year-old passed a series of medical and physical tests at the club, with a particular focus on a previously troublesome knee. While he has struggled with weight gain in the past, Caucaunibuca is thought to be in reasonable condition at present.

With former Munster hooker Denis Fogarty also at Agen, there is another reason for the Lot-et-Garonne side to become a neutral’s favourite in the Pro D2.
